First Look at the Sony Vaio UX-90S

- Rob Bushway

M_IMG_1707David Ciccone has in his hands what many of us have been waiting for in utlra mobile devices – an ultra mobile pc with a 16gb solid state flash hard drive. Although the drive is a bit small for my needs, it won’t be long before we start to see bigger drives, which means tremendous savings on battery life, speed, etc.

David has produced a video of the Sony Vaio UX-90S with the 16gb flash drive, along with comparisons to the UX180P.

Check it out

This was a great video review and anyone who's been watching the UMPC market should really check this out. He does talk about the price point ($2800! eep!) being the main downside and one of the reasons it's a little ahead of it's time but David also does a side-by-side comparison of this 16gb solid state flash drive booting up in comparison to a standard drive. It's AMAZING! The UX-90S is able to boot up and restart completely in the time it takes the UX180P to boot up just once. Truely amazing and truely innovative. This would be a great step to making ultra mobile devices even more practical than they already are.

Great review and great info! Be sure to check this one out!

David and Rob,

Thank you very much for sharing more information on this great device from Sony.

A question, as I have read that Vista will be enable ink ability, does that mean that this UX machine will not need a specific Table PC OS when Vista becomes available? People were having difficulties with inking in the Q1 and eos, especially where they rest the wrist when inking.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
Regards,
John

That is correct. I installed Vista on my UX180P. The TIP was there, Journal was there, etc. There was a lot that was broken due to driver issues, but Tablet PC support will be built-in with Vista.

The brief amount that I inked with the UX180P with Vista was a good experience because my hand stayed off of the screen. The keyboard provided a nice resting place for my hand.

The other devices ( eo, q1, p1510d ) all provided rough experiences for me because there was no place to rest my hand. Now, there isn't a lot of room to write and it definitely not like writing on a 10 or 12" slate, but it does work well.

Rob,

Thank you for that prompt reply and thoughts on your experiences between the various devices. You guys here at GTBM are the best.

You mentioned that soon there will be larger flash hard drive, what kind of time frame were you thinking of? I am just anxious to get my hand on one with a larger flash hard drive, but then wonder how much more expensive that would be.

John

Wow!!! $3,000.00. Now this has to be the drive and the UMPC, not just the drive itself, right?

Thanks, David.
