Gates Talking Windows 7 - Touch and Ink

- Matt Faulkner

Ina Fried on Cnet had the chance to talk to to Bill Gates after a speech.  Bill Gates said in an interview:

"The version after Vista is a big step forward in terms of speech," Gates said in an interview following his speech at Stanford University. "It's a big step forward in terms of ink. It's a big step forward in terms of touch."

Interesting statement...  It will be interesting to read the full transcript when it is finished and posted.  Look for that sometime today!

Bill Gates is still determined to see his vision of touch PCs realised! Which is a good thing.

I sure hope he comes through, especially in the speech department but it still depends on the hardware partners to make it happen.

(I continue to lament why the industry isn't moving toward speech as quickly as/instead of touch, they are BOTH the most intuitive way for human beings to interact. As much as we all like our tablets, it is still picking up an object to do something as opposed to simply using your voice or your finger.)

As much as Microsoft keeps trying to shy away from the area, the day may be coming when they will have to start making their own devices and PCs if nothing more than to show what they really meant before others start adding (or taking away) their two cents.

You know what they say about too many cooks in the kitchen.

The quote makes it sound like Microsoft may be integrating speech and ink - each does OK with word recognition, but combining the information from ink and voice should allow for much better accuracy and speed.

I only hope this comes when I have the money to spend. I long for an Advantage-hardware-like device that uses Origami or the N810-like OS, whose primary interface is touch driven. Now that's a device I would "need" to have.
