David Pogue Reviews the LiveScribe Pulse Smartpen

- Warner Crocker

LivescribeWe’ve written about, but not had the chance to review, LiveScibe’s new Pulse Smartpen. Maybe we’ll get our hands on one of these at some point in the future. But in the meantime, David Pogue of The New York Times did get his hands on one and gives it a once over. In case you don’t remember the LiveScribe Pulse Smartpen contains not only a digital pen, but also a camera, a microphone, and a speaker, along with a small screen to display messages.

Check out the review here.

I don't know what's going on with the shipping on these pens. I signed up for a pre-order last year and placed my "real" order minutes after receiving the e-mail allowing me to do so on March 31st. It's now May 10th and there's absolutely no indication as to when my pen may actually ship. Perhaps there's a good reason for the wait, but the company has been very poor in communicating with its customers and this isn't a very auspicious start for what seems like it could be a breakthrough device.

I was a beta tester for the pen nearly a month ago now and they were having some serious problems not so much with the pen but with the software for it. The problems were serious enough that you probably wouldn't want the pen for normal use in that state. That being said, I thought they were shipping pre-orders on schedule and delaying the main release.
