GBM InkShow: iRex iLiad E-Book Reader Part 2

- Sierra Modro

InkShow

As promised, here is Part 2 of the InkShow. In Part 2, I cover creating ink notes as well as acquiring and syncing content.

As I warned you last time, when I got done shooting the full video, I had way too much material for one InkShow, so I divided it rather arbitrarily into two parts. If you haven't had a chance to view Part 1, that's where I covered the basics - form factor, e-book reading, newspaper reading and annotating books.

Nice review Sierra, I watched them both since I am very interested in the iLiad.

One question, have you tried the difference between a PDF document pre-formatted (or properly formatted, whichever the case may be) for the iLiad?

I know with the Sony Reader, they have a walk-through of how to optimize PDF docs to display properly (or at least better) than just "dumping" them on there and taking your chances.

Is there a similar walk-through or process for the iLiad?

Or, since it is wireless, can you e-mail the file to iRex or your account and have it converted properly, then downloaded to the device?

Thanks Aaron! For the PDFs, all of the content (like the manuals) that was already present on the iLiad was PDFs "optimized" for display on the iLiad. From what it looked like to me, that just meant good font sizes and narrow margins, but I may have missed some minor nuances to the formatting.

On the iRex site you can download a document on how to create custom content . That should answer your question. Basically, print to PDF using A6 size paper, not letter or A4 size.

Thank you Sierra, answers my questions.

Now, just as soon as I can afford one ..... ;)

Sorry to be a nuisance again but this download link isn't working for me. It just brings up an htm link.

Okay, it's updated now and should be fixed. Sorry for the problems!!

Great set of videos! I had been wondering about eBooks with annotation. The lagginess is definitely a product of the E-Ink display as the technology generally requires a full-screen refresh each time. It seems iRex did some optimizations, but there is always going to be a difference in screen refresh speed vs. AM TFT.

Nice to see the Wacom pen moving from the iLiad to the PC, although my guess is the PC in the video is using a resistive touchscreen rather than a Wacom digitizer (couldn't see the exact brand/model on the PC). Still, it is one of those unsung stories, that Wacom pens can move between devices that are "Penabled" and they are even suitable for use as a stylus on those slightly-backward devices that still prefer a "passive digitizer", i.e. resistive touchscreen: simplifies "stylus management" for everyone that has multiple inking devices.
