Combine the InkSeine Tool Ring with Pen Flicks on Tablet PCs

- Warner Crocker

The GBM Forums are a hot bed of activity these days, especially when it comes to continuing to find cool ways to use the pen and InkSeine. Forum member moneyburninhole discovered a way to use the Floating Tool Ring to execute Pen Flicks in places where they may not otherwise be available. InkSeine guru, Ken Hinckley, loved this undocumented usage so much he’s created a post on his blog showing some examples of how to make this happen. And remember, the Floating Tool Ring from InkSeine can run separately from InkSeine itself.

Using the tool ring as a "flickpad"? That's f---ing genius! I might have to upgrade to Vista just to use this feature. And if a little "flickpad" area was added to the tool ring... oh, that would be sweet.

Well I'm even more cross now, cos since I "installed" Inkseine, I've had BSOD's and stop errors. And it doesn't show up in control panel, so I can't uninstall it, or reinstall it.

@archwiz: Sorry to hear you are experiencing the dreaded BSOD and stop errors. It's extremely unlikely this is due to installing InkSeine - there is no deep dark stuff we are doing (far from it - all written in managed code) and no part of InkSeine starts up by default when you boot up your computer, there are no spooky drivers, etc. So none of the InkSeine code is running until you click on its shortcut icon to start it.

If you want to be sure to nuke it anyway, you can check for any vestigates of InkSeine by looking in its install directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Research\InkSeine. It also has some registry key settings but those are just used to save user options and preferences (like where to put the floating tool ring on the screen, etc).

I hope you can get your system back up... if you have access to any technical support, I recommend calling in the troops, as it sounds like something is seriously wrong with your tablet!

One more creative way to use flicks and the tool ring together came up over the weekend - use one Flick for CTRL and then circling on the tool ring gives you zooming functionality!

My blog post has the details if you want to try it out:
