GBM ShortCut: The Blue Snowflake Microphone

- Warner Crocker

Rob and I had fun on GBM Podcast #51 testing out the Blue Snowflake portable microphone for our recording. We think the sound quality came out pretty good. The Blue Snowflake is made by Blue Microphones and is one of many microphones and audio accessories they offer. In addition to good audio quality I love the portable/mobile aspect of this microphone. Here’s a quick GBM ShortCut on the portable Blue Snowflake Microphone.

I'm really glad about this post. I actually was looking at this device about a week ago. I am looking for a very small, portable microphone for voice recognition so I can dictate into Word. I don't need headphones, just the microphone. Surprisingly I could not find much out there. Not that this device isn't bad, but it's always nice to have alternatives, so does anyone have any alternatives to suggest?

I think you were using it backwards when hanging it on a laptop screen. I think the long part goes behind the screen and the microphone orb thing sits above the screen like many web cams.

I was wondering about the same thing. How can you plug in the mini-USB if the microphone is resting against the screen? It must sit above the screen like anonymous commented. ???

Actually in reality I wasn't using it backwards the long side does go on the back of the screen. The microphone does sit above the screen.

Thanks for the job !

But the same amount of video, you could make a real demo instead of your head (75 % of amount) and the mic (25 %)... So the result is less informations than some clear pictures and text. Video is no radio time. We would prefer the mic while using it, how to fix it, can it be fully undocked from the cube, is there a handle for interview, the look of the interface... Quick clear actions 100 % around the mic would be more efficient to justify video...

A "better" small demo here (with video & pictures)...

Question,

Do you think this microphone would work well on a table between parties to a legal hearing to record people sitting on three sides of a hearing, or is it very directional and need to be pointed right at the person speaking?

Lorie,

Thanks for the comments. You're probably correct. But I'm between video cameras at the moment so I used a webcam for this. I figured it was better to get it out then wait until I picked up a new camera.

Michael,

It is directional. It won't work well in the table formation you suggest.
