I Just Bought My New Tablet PC - NOT!

- Rob Bushway

UPDATE:

Well, thanks to some sleuthing by GBM reader Yolonda Villa, I've just confirmed with Toshiba that customized M700 Tablet PC orders WILL NOT have touch at this time. Touch will be available as an option in January, though. Any customized orders placed right now will only get the active digtizer and not the multi-mode. I have canceled my order.

Thanks for hunting this down, Yolonda. If you've ordered a customized M700 thinking you were also getting touch, I'd suggest calling Toshiba and canceling your order, and waiting until January.

Toshiba needs to make this very clear on the customized ordering page.

portege m700 tablet pc I've been seriously considering the purchase of a high-end desktop or iMac, as a compliment to my OQO Model 02. However, when I saw the specs and the pricing on Toshiba's M700 Tablet PC, I knew I couldn't do any better than a desktop replacement Tablet PC priced at about what I was prepared to pay for a high-end desktop.

So, I went to ToshibaDirect and placed my order tonight for the M700 Tablet PC. Here is what I got for $1874 via the customization page:

  • T7700 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo ( no ULV stuff here ). The $300 upgrade to 2.6 ghz wasn't worth it to me. 2.4 ghz is a good sweet spot.
  • 2 gb ram
  • 120 gb 7200 rpm drive ( no 4200 rpm junk on this machine )
  • 1 gb Turbo RAM
  • Bluetooth
  • Internal DVD SuperMulti (+/-R double layer) drive
  • 12.1" WXGA 1280 x 800
  • Plus, I get all the multi-mode touch / active digitizer goodness that I've come to enjoy with my evaluation Lenovo X61.

Toshiba says they'll be shipping it to me in the next 8 - 10 days!  Meanwhile, we are still waiting for Toshiba to get Sierra a review unit so she can do the InkShow. If, by chance, my own unit gets here first, I'm going to send it straight to Sierra instead, so she can do her very first InkShow! Isn't that nice of me? She'll be able to do a direct comparison to the HP 2710p.

So, stay tuned - lot's of M700 goodness coming your way!

Wow, that seems like such a good deal after the release of the XT. Great specs at a reasonable price.

Hey Rob - I'll hold you to that! I want to give that new Tablet PC a try!

Hey Rob, I am curious, what made you pull the trigger so quickly?

Based on the price of the Dell tablet, I've decided to buy an M700 for work instead of the Dell. Hopefully I'll have it in time to go on Vacation, but if not, I'll happily have it when I get back. :)

Brian, good specs (CPU, and Touch), good looks (good job on the new hinge supports), and finally... good price.

Any thoughts about swapping the Harddrive for a SSD? :)

A Tablet PC as a desktop replacement sounds like a contradiction, but in my experience, it works. My Toshiba R25 is my primary computer, meaning it's my desktop and mobile PC, and I am not missing having a desktop. With the considerably higher specs on your M700, I don't think you'll miss using a desktop either. Mobility is a different story (I sometimes miss the mobility of my Electrovaya SC500 in its prime), but you've got that covered with the OQO. Look forward to seeing how that sweet setup works for you.

Rob, I have a burning question for you:

When you look at the specs of the preconfigured M700-S7002 at Toshiba direct, under display type it reads "WXGA LED Backlight Display supporting digital pen and touch with indoor/outdoor viewing". But when you try to customize one, touch is missing! Under display type it reads "12.1" WXGA Backlit Display supporting digital pen with indoor/outdoor viewing (1280x800)".

Further, someone over at TabletPC Review (page 5 post #48, under their initial announcement of the M700's release), says that after seeing this discrepancy he spoke to a sales rep who stated that indeed you cannot at this time order a customized M700 with touch.

I'm anxious to order a M700 too (finally ready to move up from my trusty M200, and since the Motion LE1700 with WriteTouch never became available), but this concerns me greatly. I know that even sales reps don't always have the correct information, so do you have any ideas on how I can clarify this issue?

Loren Heiny called Toshiba sales and he was told that all the M700's do indeed come with touch. It is just a mistake that touch was not included in that description.

HDD for SSD: I'll look into after I get it...definitely intriguing.

Looking at what is out there and already announced, I decided to order this - pricing is fantastic, especially considering the features.

Thanks Rob, but after getting my order to the last stage of the shopping cart I called as well, and was told the same thing as the poster on TPC Review was told: That all sales reps have an email from Toshiba Corporate to the effect that any customized M700 ordered now will not have touch. And, that it will be available, but only in January!

Very distressing, but I don't dare finalize my order under these circumstances. I guess I'll have to wait to see what transpires -- maybe when you receive your M700 I'll know for sure.

I wonder when the M700 will be available in Canada... The Dell TabletPC and the Dell ONE are not available in Canada yet, either.

But the Toshiba M700 is the TabletPC to beat, as far as I'm concerned - even without the Touch feature on BTO models until January. The specs rock at this price.

Its too bad about having to cancel all your orders - but on the plus side, January is not very far away!

rock on!

Wow, thanks! I almost pulled the trigger.. I don't know if touch is such a big priority for me at the moment.. drooling over the T2010 and it's amazing led display. ;-)

Anyone have any votes for the best / lightest / dual core / best screen current TPC?
