GBM InkShow: OneNote Synchronization

- Rob Bushway

InkShow Video Review OneNote 2007 Syncronization A frequent topic of discussion in our forums is that of synchronization. Due to the nature of mobile computing, It is an issue that affects all of us. The problem is, there are many solutions out there, but not all of them are best for syncing all file types.  For example, what is the best way to sync OneNote? Josh Einstein to the rescue.

In this InkShow, Josh Einstein, of Einstein Technologies / Tablet Enhancement for Outlook fame, goes in depth to show the various ways of syncing OneNote files across multiple computers and data connections. If you ever wanted to know about OneNote and syncing, this is your opportunity.

Our special thanks to Josh for producing this indepth InkShow and tackling this issue for us all. Please feel free to leave questions / comments. I'm sure Josh will do his best to answer them.

Hey thanks for getting this up so quickly. The click to play link doesn't work for me, but the wmv link does.

And sorry in advance guys for my "umms" and "like..." I don't normally do these kinds of presentations. It started out as a word document and I figured it'd be better as a video.

Really helpful, Josh!

I thought you did a great job of presenting, and I really appreciate getting the tip on how to share an existing notebook.

Thanks,

Sharon

Hi Scoobie, I didn't notice that tags don't get synchronized. I only recently started creating custom tags. Now do you mean that custom tags aren't shown as being tagged on the other PC or are you referring to the customizations not being transferred because the customizations are stored externally?

Josh,

All I can say is thank you. I feel like I owe you a service call to my house. That felt like you came in and calmly taught me how to set up my network. VERY nice job. Your delivery was relaxing and after watching that I am thinking "Hey, I can do that!"

Why would anyone ever pay like the GeekSquad or some Network Specialist to come to their house when you have a resource like this???

Please entertain doing other informative seminars. I would even pay to attend something like this. There is a market for something like this....someone just has to figure out how to package it and make a nice little income for something like this.

Thank you very much!

Hi Josh,
thanks for the reply. I think its the tags you've customized that arent sync'd, because they are held externally.
In theory I guess it should be possible to sync them - maybe using vistas sync functionality - but I dont recall seeing a solution published anywhere.
Calls for a Powertoy maybe

Just did some research on tags synchronization, Descapa got asked about this on the Onenote Microsoft community. He said:

"When you create custom tags they are stored on only one machine. And they
are located here:
%userprofile%\Application Data\microsoft\onenote\12.0\Preferences.dat
You may copy those from one machine to another to keep those tags across
machines, this isn't an ideal solution but it does work for small groups
like this."

Josh.. I have Vista and OneNote 2007 on my desktop and tablet. I installed Hamachi on both machines as you discribed and can see that the machines are connected. I then tried to set up a OneNote Notebook over the Hamachi VPN but in my Vista Network it does not appear. I can see both machines under Network but those were set up within my home network. I want to take advantage of synching on the road with Hamachi. Did I miss something?

Hi Frick, you gotta make sure that network discovery and file sharing are turned on. (They are independent settings. Network discovery just means "will show up" and file sharing actually determines whether or not any shares are published.)

One thing I didn't really get into in that video, which I probably should have, is how Vista determines public and private networks. It's a complicated topic that could use its own discussion, but basically, if Vista can't identify the Hamachi client, which by default I don't think it will, then it will put your computer in the Public Zone. This by default has file sharing turned off which is why I recommended going in and making sure it was turned on. So what you should do is now that you have Hamachi set up on both machines and you're joined to a Hamachi network, go ahead and check Network and Sharing Center on both PC's and make sure file sharing and network discovery are turned on. If you still can't get to the PC by name, try it using the Hamachi IP address. Feel free to contact me at first name @einsteintech.net.
