Is Voice Recognition For You?

- Rob Bushway

John Hill of Allegiance Technology Partners is blogging again, and has penned a good article on voice recognition, covering Dragon Naturally Speaking and the built-in speech reco in Vista.

I'm not a big speech reco person myself, but I know folks who swear by it.

What about you? Do you have much success with speech / voice reco?

I haven't had much success with it yet but boy do I need it! My situation is that I get on conference calls that I usually record in OneNote and then have to transcribe to text for various proposals I need to do. VR would save me tremendous amounts of time. I haven't found a solution yet that will recognize multiple voices and transcribe to text. Dragon NS only will recognize 1 voice and will not work for my application.

Still looking.

I have tried it, mainly on my
Samsung Q1P because of it's lack
of keyboard, but it was such a hit-n
miss, that I finally gave up on it.
We're still far from perfecting the
technology, but I'm sure it will come
in very handy once we get there.
For now, I'm stuck using the
Origami keyboard when I'm on the
go.

I had high hopes for it but, alas, it just hasn't worked out. Once you add in the time it takes to edit the document afterwards I find it doesn't save any time. I'm not talking about mispronunciation or spelling mistakes but the lack of intuition the programs seem to have. For example:

If I'm writing a story and there's lots of conversations, the first letter after quotation marks is invariably a capital letter. I have yet to find a way for DNS to do this. There are many more examples I could give but hopefully you get the drift. it makes for a very frustrating experience.

I wish it would be. I would honestly much rather interact with my computer via voice than pen or keyboard - at least for things like basic tasks.

That Intel proof of concept for MIDs video they put out a while ago is what I wish were commonplace.

But every time I watch Minority Report or some reruns of Star Trek I always think to myself "why is voice recognition still so far behind the potential?"

I use DNS because of RSI. I have a custom vocabulary and command software. If you can type 60 plus WPM all day with no problem I doubt you will put up with the quirks. I wouldn't be able to work full time without it. There is a big up front commitment especially if you require special formatting. It also takes a very robust machine to get acceptable response time.
