GBM InkShow: Dell Latitude XT and HP tx2051z Go Head-To-Head

- Rob Bushway

InkShow Warner and I had a great time at the Microsoft MVP Summit last week. More than the visit to Microsoft, I really enjoyed spending some time with my good friend, Warner. While there, we took the opportunity to record this video, showcasing the Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC and the HP tx2051z Tablet PC. In addition to putting the two Tablet PCs head to head, we have a great time talking about Tablet PC issues in general, touch, ink, and more. Consider this InkShow to be a video podcast!

Rob,

Did you get a product placement fee from Coca Cola? If not, you need to check out a new source of revenue :)

Excellent InkShow! If these two wonderful products aren't proof of the healthy and growing manufacturer interest in - make that exploitation of - the TabletPC market, then I don't know what is. And sitting here sipping my Coke (product plug), thanks to you two folks I believe I've finally made up my mind on my next TabletPC. Only my desire not to be seen as a cheapwad prevents me from saying which one I've selected...

"who is the target market for the Dell XT?" the Dell faithful?

Thanks guys, I really enjoyed this ink show. There was never a dull moment.
You two are good together.

Although the Dell is my preference, currently I am just not willing to pay the price. I would go for the HP, however it is much too heavy. Can't wait for lighter models to come out. Until they do, I will be on this M200.

Very nice ink show guys. One thing I'm still curious about is the performance difference. They use different CPUs so it would be good to get a feel for which feels better in terms of performance.
What are the Windows Experience Index scores for each (broken out by component) for example?

This was great, guys. My Gateway CX210x is done for as a Tablet and I am about to purchase a replacement. (On my 3rd GW pen and they no longer sell them - seems that even GW has given up on my model). These head-to-head shows are great for those of us contemplating a purchase. I will be going with the HP as I am living on a limited grad student budget. Thanks for the help!

Warner quotes $1700 for the HP TX2000 series, and that is about right for the one in his hands, but that unit is maxed out on 4 RAM and lots of features. If you can settle for 2 gig RAM and pare down extras, you can configure the TX for under $1100. That, to me, makes this a STUDENT tablet pc.

Rob and Warner,

First, thanks for the show. Second, I the glare on the TX looked like it was pretty extreme. Some are even reporting that the glare makes the tablet difficult to use in "office lighting." Not quite sure what "office lighting" means, but I assume it refers to fluorescent lighting. In any case, would you mind sharing your thoughts about if the glare is sufficient to keep the tablet from being usable?

Thanks,

~A

Tablet for artists? Really?
Let's make things clear. When you fire up the tablet, there is no pressure sensitivity in photoshop. This shoots cold any artist.

As anyone would do, I installed the wacom drivers... and... it still didn't work! After hours of research, I discovered a registry fix. I applied it... and it still did wanted to work! The pen was badly aligned. It turned out it was a bug in wacom's driver. After many months of patience, Wacom eventually released a working Vista driver and things became more workable. From time to time the pen is again misaligned and I have to uninstall and reinstall wacom's drivers.

Tablets will be for artists the day things will work out of the box.

Hmm.. I have three tablets and all of them have pressure sensitivity "work out of the box" with Photoshop (which I use every day). There is an issue with perfect cursor registration but I have just got used to following the cursor not the pen tip.

This is the best show you have done. Everybody does inboxings or demos by scribbling in Journal. But nobody does regular comparisons between models. I too would like to have had an opinion on the comparitive performance but more comparisons of "similar" product is definately on my wish list.
