Flybook V5i Tablet PC InkShow

- Rob Bushway

I've been looking forward to reviewing Dialogue's Flybook V5i Tablet PC ever since our first look at it during CES. When iCube.us generously offered to send us a review unit a couple of weeks ago, we jumped all over it. Kudos to iCube.us for reaching out to us so we could bring you this video review.

flybookpicinkshow As an ultra-portable device, the Flybook V5i really shines. It is small, fast, light, and has integrated broadband support. With a Core Duo 1.2 ghz processor and 1gb of ram, the V5i should be plenty fast for those needing an ultra-portable solution. However, I was disappointed with how the V5i operated as a Tablet PC. With no hardware buttons on the screen and no palm-rejection technology, using this device in tablet mode is confining. In addition, the innovative mouse and trackstick placement is not productive for those needing to do even a little bit of keyboarding due to the constant hand motion.

Here is a quick rundown on what I covered in the InkShow review:

General comments

  • Review of the specs, Experience Index, and Crystal Mark score

  • General tour of the V5i and how it is designed to be used

  • A demo of the camera

  • A demo of typing on the V5i, along with a size comparison to the Stowaway keyboard

  • A demo of Dialogue's well designed Control Center

  • A look at the case and strap

  • How the V5i stacks up as a Tablet PC

Machine specs (as reviewed):

  • Genuine Windows® Vista™ Business
  • Display: 8.9" 1024 x 600 display, wide aspect ratio
  • Hard drive - 60gb 4200 RPM
  • Processor: Core Duo 1.2 ghz (U2500)

Note: I made a mistake in the video by calling one of the mouse buttons a minimize button. It is a middle scroll button.

  • Watch or download the High Res version (24:17 minutes, 185mb, Windows Media streaming or direct download)

    Nice review Rob!
You should definitely take a look at the LG C1 Express Dual tabletpC...
It's also an ultralight touch screen tablet but it has palm rejection technology (writing is great on this device) and it has programmable hardware buttons on the front bezel. It's very similar to the P1610 but much more powerful (Core Duo 1.2Ghz)...it's also fairly cheaper than the V5.
