Belkin's New Mini-Surge Protector Looks Like a Nice Addition to the Gadget Bag

- Warner Crocker

Belkin’s new Mini-Surge Protector (affiliate link) looks like it might come in handy for many a mobile warrior. Small and lightweight it offers three AC outlets and two USB ports on a 360 degree rotating plug with four locking positions. I’ve been very content using the Monster Outlets To Go accessory in my mobile arsenal for some time, but I just ordered one of Belkin’s new products to check out. What can I say, I have a love for these kind of accessories. Ok, it’s not a love, it’s an obsession. There I admit it.

By the way, make sure you check the other sellers from Amazon. Prices seem to vary widely on this item.

Define "new" :)

I bought mine several months ago (online, for about $20) and have since it in brick and mortar stores for as low as $14.99.

Also might be worth pointing out that it doesn't seem that it will work in countries with 220/240V power. Which is too bad since I travel quite a bit internationally.

Oliver, no need to. I think you just did. ;)

Warner, I have this. To me the issue is whether you want the plug or the cord that is on the Monster and the Kensington. All otherwise have about the same number of plugs and either 1 or 2 USB outlets. Also there is the issue of whether you want all the plugs on the same side, or some on the opposite side like the Monster or Belkin. Finally the form factor of the Monster and Kensington is a bit more squareish than the Belkin. Hope this all makes sense.

I'm always in favour of ones that plug in with a cord like the Monster. I've spent my whole life struggling against manufacturers convinced that a huge brick up against a wall outlet is a sound engineering practice, so anything that takes up more room against the wall outlet than is absolutely necessary gets panned.

I've been using the Belkin for several months now. While traveling, I will often have my tablet, phone & Ipod juicing up at one time in the hotel room or conference room. I have also used it at meetings, to add a couple more outlets for team mates.

With built-in 120vAC outlet/inverters availabel in bmany vehicles, the corded connection is better. WHen thers are similar/competeing accesories it would be nice to see all the linkes listed.
