Google Docs Gets a Makeover

- Warner Crocker

Google Docs has gotten a nip and a tuck and has redone the look of their Cloud applications. While it isn’t a major overhaul, the look and feel now feels a bit more like Microsoft Office prior to the 2007 GUI.

Googledocs

I’m not a big user of Google Docs primarily because the spreadsheet application is so lacking and most of the spreadsheets I work with are more complex than I can work with in Google Docs. While the word processor is sufficient enough to do some of my word processing, it has been mostly an experiment for me to use it, not a difference in work flow.

So, I’m curious. How many GBM readers use Google Docs and what are your experiences? Chime in.

Well, I use Google docs, but not really as a word processor. I use it as document storage in the cloud. I upload things like course syllabi, class handouts, etc. so that I have access to them from any computer. It's just another way to make sure that I can keep track of course documents and refer to them whenever and wherever I need to.

I am not a regular user.
However, on a couple of different occasions I have found myself needing to (or at least finding real benefit in being able to) do some word processing from a machine without anything adequate on board.
To be able to access a decent word processor was quite handy.
I appreciated it.

I use Google Docs to store (and edit) documents which I need to have access often. I haven't created an entire document in this application, but it has been very useful to me because I can gain access to these documents from any computer or mobile device.

I use Office day to day but GD is extremely handy for storing docs for sharing or for handy access anywhere. Since I could be on one of four PCs that I regularly use I cannot guarantee that I will have any particular document with me.

I will give you some for instances.

Secret Santa. We do a SS for the family - wife, four children and their spouses. I share the SS with list with the family and they can update this wish list so that their SS can choose from this list if they desire.

Call forward process. The call forward process for work is rather complex and requires several numbers and complex series of IVR prompts. I can store the procedure in a document and it is available wherever I am.

I like to see how the price of HDDs are progressing. I keep a spreadsheet with the size, price and price per G and share it with some tech friends for handy reference.

I play in an online game where we often have cars game tournaments. I can create a spreadsheet of the participants of the tournament with latest results and make it public so that people can track the scores as they progress.

I find the power in Google docs is in the ability to share and to have the document available whereever I am.
