More on the Dell XT Gridding Issue - Dell Speaks

- Rob Bushway

So, I've been talking with a Dell representative this morning on this Latitude XT / N-Trig gridding issue.

Dell confirmed to me that it is a result of the capacitive touch digitizer technology; and, the grid is viewable when off, dim, viewed at different angles, and sometimes under fluorescent lighting. When operating under normal brightness settings, though, it is not easily viewable (I agree). Apparently, it is even less viewable with the LED screen. As Steve eloquently pointed out and Dell confirmed, it is a trade off of having the capacitive touch technology, and is a design issue.

The Dell rep told me that they ultimately want me to be happy with the technology purchase; and if I'm not happy, then they would work out whatever they needed to do: trade in for the LED model or do a refund. In addition, I have up to a month to decide. You don't see that being offered very much in this industry.

Thanks to Dell's generous return policy, I'm going to push through and see if I can get to the point of it being a non-issue. I may ultimately go the LED route since the grid is apparently less visible.

In the end, I need to decide if the XT and the superior capacitive touch experience is worth the intermittent visual disruption. Thankfully, I have some time to decide. I'll keep everyone up to date on my progress.

Hopefully, this whole process will help our readers work through the known issues of the XT before deciding for themselves if the XT is for them.

It shows how important little things are once we get over the 'wow' factor of owning some cool new tech! Once you live with a device day in day out the things that you think you can put up with originally become more annoying.

Rob, do Dell know who you are (as in owner of GBM) or were they truly dealing with you as a 'normal' customer? I've got to say that this appears to be excellent service if this is typical of their current approach with customers!

I wonder what they do with all those machines that are traded or returned? Just throw them away? They can throw one in a box and ship it to Belgium then!

Dell do has an excellent customer support, but this is very generous of them

<<...I wonder what they do with all those machines that are traded or returned?..>>

...I can't speak for Dell, but in many cases these machines are inspected and resold as refurbished (Fujitsu) or they may be donated to charitable groups or used in OEM-sponsored programs like the ones you sometimes see in schools...

According to the rep I spoke with, they have a normal 21 day return policy. Now, they do know who I am now and told me they would be willing to work with me, within reason, to ensure I was satisfied. The rep I was spoke with was given my call because he specializes in online communities, but he said the 21 day return policy was standard.

I don't believe I am receiving an preferrential treatment. In fact, just yesterday, I received a call from a Dell Customer Support person who was tracking my order for me ( they did not know I ran a tablet pc site ). They told me that they wanted to make sure I was happy with the unit I ordered, and if I was unhappy with anything, to be sure to let them know because they would be more than happy to trade it in or address anything that was of a concern to me, etc. They told me about their 21 day return policy, too.

Dell's customer service is the best I've ever worked - very proactive.

Are you planning to do an ink show on the XT? It would be good to see it operating live, particularly the capacitive touch feature.

Thanks!

yes, I'll be doing one next week. I needed to get use it this week to really understand it before doing the overall inkshow. In fact, I'm planning a series of them on different features.

I have the XT with the LED screen. I was not even aware of the grid until your series of posts on the subject. I just never saw it. I can sort of see it now that I know it's there.

This is a complete non-issue for me, at least on my LED screen.

With such a high price tag, one would hope (and Dell can certainly afford) to be generous with a support and/or a trade in!

I too have the XT with LED screen. I too was completely unaware of the grid until Rob's post. Even after reading Rob's post, I have not seen the grid on my machine. And I got my eyes checked just two months ago! For me, this is a great machine; granted, it is expensive. I will not be trading mine in. 3rd tablet I've had.

Oh man, Rob, look what you went and did! All these owners out there who didn't see the grid are now not going to be able to look beyond it (:

Seriously though, it sounds like a great machine that's made some concessions to push the envelope...hmm...

I wonder if they sell refurbed refurbs? That would likely be the only way I could afford one (:

Dell is a great PC maker and the return policy is great but why not the M700 with touch?

Not to seem like a PITA BUT ....so you can see the grid....so what? Does it interfere with your everyday usage of the tablet?

...Speaking for myself, no, it doesn't.

All I can say is, if that's the cost of dual mode capacitive multitouch touch... so be it!

Robdam / MRPACS: it is a bothersome to me as, depending the on the light coming in behind me or the angle I'm looking at the screen, the grid shows up and I have to adjust the screen angle to not see it. I've had to do that several times this morning already as my back is against a window and the angle of my screen was displayign the grids quite well. A quick adjustment of the angle, though, fixed it.

I did hear from some other folks at Dell late on Friday and they think I might have something wrong with my screen as it should not be as visible as I'm able to see it.
