GBM InkShow: An Insane Conversation About InkSeine

- Rob Bushway

IMG_0013 Yesterday was totally awesome. Microsoft Research's Ken Hinckley and Raman Sarin rolled out the red carpet for Warner, Craig Pringle, WNewquay, and myself. We spent the day talking about InkSeine, pen navigation, gestures, ink, Surface, and more. Another highlight was visiting with Andy Wilson, the man behind Surface.

While visiting and talking Tablet, we taped this conversation between the six of us that I hope you enjoy.

Raman mentioned Ken had some papers. Does anyone know where they are?

I've also recently uploaded a bunch of pen & tablet related videos from various research projects to soapbox.

awesome video. I love Inkseine. i like to take notes and search on inkseine then take it to one note for a remake. unfortunately you can not open up inserted inkseine files...of course i haven't given much effort to find a way to do it just yet!

now if only you can do an addon for firefox so i can use your awesome scroll gesture to scroll through gbm ( I actually had a moment with this issue)

Re: opening up InkSeine files, the InkSeine file association is currently not being set-up correctly by our installer. We have a fix for this coming in the next update (probably sometime in May), or you can manually set it. Just right click on an .iks file and choose Open with... navigate to inkseine.exe in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Research\InkSeine and be sure to check it off to "use this program by default".

The Tool Ring scroller (a.k.a. "crazy arrow") sometimes not working in Firefox is a standing mystery. It does work for some people, but not others. I suspect it has something to do with which Firefox extensions are installed, but we have not been able to narrow it down any further than that... For example I know of some users who have multiple devices, and it works with Firefox on one device and not the other...

Excellent conversation, guys. And nice seeing and hearing from Ken and Raman. As for making the pen a first class citizen, you did it! I actually find myself switching to pen mode and using Inkseine to do a search!

@David, Matt: For bonus points, name the slate tablet PC lying to the left of the screen, *AND* the keyboard in front of the display. Hint: I did a bunch of research for this keyboard and worked with the product group on many of its features.

@FeralBoy: 'atta boy! Even though I have that nice keyboard in front of my Cintiq, I rarely type in searches directly, but almost always ink them into InkSeine :-)

Thanks ken the manual association worked!

on firefox the tool ring has worked for me (very awesome). but i would like an addon in firefox that gives me freedom from the tool ring. comparing your twirl gesture to say pen flicks i must say that the twirl is a more natural feel for me rather than a jumpy fell that pen flicks give. i would like a way to touch any part of the website and perform that gesture much like pen flicks.

Inkseine has changed my inking world!

thank again ken!

You know I come here almost every day and I missed this program. Just installed it and I’m going to give it a spin. Looks promising
