HTC Shift Brochure and Specs

- Rob Bushway

Kaz911, the Man of the HTC Hour, has turned in to the Man of the HTC Week, with news that is causing many people to "shift their plans". Just to silence the critics that claim the specs he posted were not real, he's scanned in the HTC Shift brochure and has it posted on his site. The images below are just snippets, so click through to see the high res shot of both pages of the brochure.

Notice the different battery times - Up to 2 hours run-time on Vista vs 8 hours...hmm. Those other 6 hours must be when only running the "limited mobile office" or SideShow office feature. Up-to 2 hours likely means an hour to an hour and a half of real use. That just doesn't cut it for me and I don't think it will cut it for many other folks.

Maximum 2 hours of working with Vista :-(
It's still a fantastic machine, I wonder what the price will be...

OK, this does not make sense.
In looking at the scanned brochure, 2nd bullet point under Highlights is:
“Incredible 8 hours of battery life ensures the HTC Shift is on the go as long as you are”
Then under Key Features, the third bullet point is:
“Up to 8 hours battery life”
However under Specifications it lists 2 hours operating time for Windows Vista.
Anybody else make sense of this??

So, 800MHz A110 CPU, same as the Q1 Ultra.
800x480 display compared to the Ultra’s 1024x600 display.
1GB RAM compared to 2GB RAM capability of the Q1 Ultra (as per Hugo).

Now to top it all off, 2 hours of battery compared to 4 for the Q1 Ultra? Plus you can get the extended battery for the Ultra as well.

Just not seeing any point in the Shift at this point. The only real selling points now are the keyboard and form factor.
Me, I’ll stick with my Ultra. Or maybe upgrade to the new OQO that got announced. But the Shift is no longer on my list. It’s a shame, I was looking forward to it.

Is it just me, or did Hugo seem pretty convinced in his videos with the Shift that it was actually running Windows Mobile? If it was, why on earth are they changing such a key feature at the last minute? If memory serves, there are other computers with crippled sorta-on modes for things like email (I think even the TC1100 could do that) that don't need a whole second processor to do it, so why does the Shift need a Qualcomm (sp?) processor just to be a sideshow device? I just be confused, but this just doesn't seem to add up.

On the matter of battery life, my memory could just be faulty, but wasn't Hugo getting better than 2 hours using Vista when he had it?

Nothing against Kaz911, but I'm seriously hoping he's wrong about all of this.

Enough with the HTC already. That's all I hear about - HTC this, HTC that! I thought iPhone this and iPhone that was bad, but really. Everyone needs to make a single post and let it stand for a few days. Why the need for a minute by minute, play by play of this or that technology.
What is the misson statement for GBM, really.

I hear and feel your pain, Dave, and I'm sorry if our coverage of the Shift or any device gets too much for you. That said, the HTC Shift and what we find out about it is news and to some it is more pressing and current than others. The same is true for other technologies and devices as well. Our mission is to provide the best coverage we can about the Tablet PC/UMPC/Mobile scene. Like it or not, the HTC Shift has already had a major impact in at least two of those areas, and all brochures and specs aside I, for one, am still not convinced we know all there is to know.

While we might occasionally go overboard on the news surrounding a particular device, if we followed your advice and let a few articles stand for a few days we'd disappoint the readers who come here each day looking for the latest news we are able to bring. So, in many ways, it is a case of not being able to please everyone all the time. We hear you though and respect your opinion on this.

I have probably been one of the most ardent defenders of the Shift in recent days, however can I just say I didn't "doubt" Kaz's news reporting nor coverage, I doubted HTC on the specifications. That might seem odd but were getting mixed reviews of this device all over the shack.

Hell look at the brouchure, who knows the specifications anymore clearly, 2, 8, 53 hours? oh and on the full brouchure whats this about GPS?

This just proves the original point that its possible the HTC Booth has made some errors, or that the specs are not as finalised as we thought.

Again, I just think:

1. Hugos review and 3 hrs...

2. Its HTC they know the importance of squeezing the maximum battery life out of devices and did a fantastic job with the Advantage, why would they tolerate any less on this?

Its looking like Hugo was wrong and three hours is it, but im still holding out hope!

I think GPS is just a typo... Should have said GPRS.

but lets see if our collective comments does not change HTC stance a bit. :-)

Still the Performance Index was 2.0 in vista - which is the same as the UX90s (1.2 Ghz Core Solo.)

I was so eager for this when Hugo first reviewed it. But 2 hours? And no true WM6? No way.

Without a 1024x600 NATIVE screen it's going to suck..

Let me make this clear ..
I have the cash here for a Shift and was waiting for the release but not now .. SO HTC have lost my custom how many more ?
