Livescribe Pulse SmartPen Is Getting Lots of Ink

- Warner Crocker

The Livescribe Plus SmartPen is getting lots of coverage this morning and from what I’ve read and seen it looks like it will continue to do so. A part of a recent trend of pens that capture digital ink to transfer back to your computer, the Livescribe Plus SmartPen also captures what they are callling 3D audio with dual microphones. The Livescribe Plus SmartPen uses a special paper and is expected to ship in March in 1GB and 2GB flavors ranging from $149 to $199. There is a demo available at the Livescribe site. Gizmodo has a hands on video of the pen in use as well.

Hmmm... clever marketing for one. Also looks like an interesting product. I am always leery of these devices that require special paper as I wonder how much the paper will cost and how easily I'll be able to find it.
I thought the presenter on the site said in one of the videos that you could print the paper at home. I wonder if there is a charge for that... beyond the ink and paper I mean.
Also, the actual pen cartridges look quite small.
It does have some tempting features; but, I usually go through 8 to 10 full size pens ( I prefer the extra find pilot g series, thanks. ) per semester. I would be buying lots of those little ink refills I think. I wonder too where I would get those and how much?
I'd love to see some independent reviews. Particularly I'd love some reviews as to the quality and usability of the recording, which is often a problem in a lecture setting. Also, I wonder what type of file the audio is and how much battery life and storage hold up.

Pretty interesting though...

Thanks Mike very insightful comments : ) I'm a Liverscribe hopeful and regrettably it will only come out in March.

@Warner: Regardless the prank Gizmodo pulled and quite a number of inappropriate sexual contents on the site, it still pulled the first review of the pen.

I for one am looking forward to the release of the Livescribe digital pen - it promises a lot and I think will finally bring some consumer acceptance to the digital pen.

Having used digital pens for awhile, I think you will be amazed by the technology and what you can actually do with it.

I hope the launch goes well for them!
