GBM ShortCut: InkSeine From Microsoft Research

- Matt Faulkner

inkseine All I can say is that using this program has been some of best times I have had on my Tablet PC in a long time...

We have all been waiting to get our hands on this program for a while and it has now been released to Tablet PC MVP's for testing - the install is currently not available to the general public.  I have a quick screen capture that was made as a top level overview of InkSeine.  There will be a full InkShow done in the near future, but we wanted to bring you some footage of it in action right away.

In this GBM ShortCut I take you over a quick look at using Ink and some of the radial menus with the pen.  I also have a very quick example of using the linking and then on to the searching capabilities of the InkSeine.  If there are any question about the application please feel free to ask, and also remember that there will be a more in depth look at this cool program here on GottaBeMobile soon!!

Are there plans to integrate these features with One Note?

It looks neat, but I'm just not seeing a scenario where I would prefer InkSeine over OneNote. I am sure that developers have considered this and I am just shortsighted. It would be great if you could address this in your inkshow.

Man, I am sooo jealous! This program looks awesome...I've been wanting to get my hands on it for months. As for it's relation to OneNote, I think Ken Hinkley mentioned that one possibility for the product would be as part of OneNote. Or Journal. My vote is that they meld it into the OS so we can use it's funtionality throughout, but I know I'm dreaming now (:

Anway, this must mean that a broader release is imminent. Let's hope!

Hi Folks! Here are some quick answers to some of the comments. Thanks for your interest and we hope people will have fun playing with InkSeine when it becomes more widely available. None of the Tablet PC MVP's machines have actually exploded in flames yet as a result of installing InkSeine so that is an encouraging sign :-)

- General Public release: We have previously announced it will be out in Q1 2008, as reported here on GottaBeMobile, but we don't have an exact date yet; it will be a reserach prototype (not a product) that you can download from research.microsoft.com.

- Best experience with InkSeine is on Vista. But it does work on Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Vista uses your email corpus to enhance its word list, so searching for words like "UMPC" actually works, whereas on XP it still thinks I'm searching for "Ump" :-) We also have some minor rendering glitches on XP that we won't be fixing any time soon. InkSeine supports both Tablet PC's and UMPC's.

- OneNote: OneNote is a very cool program, I use it myself for a lot of stuff, but not so much for inking. I think InkSeine and OneNote are good for different things. InkSeine's main value adds are in the search functionality, and in how we integrate some other functionality with a UI designed from the ground up specifically for the pen. The net result is that InkSeine makes it really easy to throw together cool mixed media notes on your tablet, with information arranged spatially on the page in any way that you see fit.

- Finally, if people see things in the Shortcut / forthcoming InkShow that they like or don't like, or if your favorite feature seems to be missing, post a comment and we'll take that under consideration as we do our external deployment.

InkSeine of course! I've used it very heavily for all of my "real" notes, design sketches, etc. since about May of 2007.
