More OQO Model 02 SSD Tests

- Rob Bushway

I'm doing some more comparison tests on the OQO Model 02 1.6 ghz 32 GB SSD and the Model 02 1.5 ghz 60 gb 4200 rpm units.

Chippy, from UMPCPortal.com, asked me to install HD Tune on both the SSD and Non-SSD Model 02's. I did and ran the benchmarking tests. The results are pretty remarkable. It is the fastest UMPC / Ultra Mobile Tablet PC I've ever used - period.

Model Min Transfer Rate Max Transfer Rate Average Access Time Burst Rate CPU Usage
Model 02 1.6 ghz 32 GB SSD 19.6 mb / sec 46.6 mb / sec 39.8 mb / sec .3 ms 36.6 mb / sec 21.7%
Model 02 1.5 ghz 60 gb 4200 rpm 9.0 mb / sec 22.5 mb / sec 17.8 mb / sec 20.3 ms 50.7 mb /sec 7.1%

BTW - Battery life on the SSD OQO Model 02 is showing to be about a 45 improvement over the HDD model. I just ran 4 or 5 HD Tune tests on battery, and the SSD is showing about 5.5 hours left, the HDD model showing about 4.75 hours left. I'll do more testing on that.

Interesting info, do you think you could run Crystal Mark on the OQO O2 SSD, and regular OQO O2? Here is the link -

My apologies, I forgot to mention that it is just another benchmark app, I've been benching a bunch of UX models and it would be good to see how they compare. It would also give a good point of relation to the scores of the UX's.

I have one and it is very fast on file transfers and copying, opening programs etc. On file transfers and copying--faster than anything I have ever used. I am really enjoying (but have not got the credit card statement on it yet).

Thats a great result from the SSD drive. Very nice.

I was getting much faster read speeds on my HDD compared to yours though.
Max 34MB/s average 26MB/s. I cant imagine that the 1.6Ghz processor and 120GB drive makes that much difference over the 1.5Ghz/60GB drive.

Still, the SSD looks like a great little whipper-snapper!

sure...I'll see what I can do, and post those results up for the inkshow.

that is surprising to see the difference in speeds between the two HDD versions..interesting.

Go SSD, never go back!

Wow that's interesting. I thought SSD's had lower max transfer rates in exchange for better access time? I know that's true of USB/flash media but honestly I don't know much about storage technology.

Rob,

Nice job on the benchmarks. Any chance you could run Battery Eater on the device to see where the battery life ends up? My Q1 Ultra came in at 332 minutes with the extended battery (7800 mAh) and 164 minutes with standard battery (4000 mAh) using Battery Eater Pro 2.70. It would be nice to see how it compares.

So far, the OQO2 is looking pretty sweet. Boy I wish the price would come down though.
