Help Us Improve - The Mic Is Yours

- Rob Bushway

We are on a continuing process of improving what we do on GottaBeMobile in order to bring you the very best in mobile pc coverage. From daily news coverage to InkShows, Podcasts, and forums, we offer a wide range of mediums to bring you the information you are most interested in.

Now, although we love getting kudos and pats on the back , what we really need to know from you guys is how we can improve. Be brutally honest - we've got thick skin. I mean it. If we are doing something that sucks, tell us. If the site loads slow, you hate the layout / design, you wish we would stop writing about certain things and concentrate more in another area, tell us.  I can't promise we will fix all the issues, but I certainly want to know what they are, how we can improve, thus making your experience on GottaBeMobile more enjoyable and productive.

The mic is yours.

Every second word(s) on here is "Tablet PC" and every third is "inking". While I share your passion for the Tablet PC you're called GottaBeMOBILE.com. So please branch out and don't be so single minded - the majority of mobile gadgetry out there is non-Tablet PC and you should be covering that more. Other than that - Great Job!

I have already shared my pet peeve. If you click on a link to the whole article, whether it be the title of the article, read more, or the link at the top of the page, whatever, everything associated with it should be on the next page. I like to check back on comments I leave, and it gets frustrating having to click and click.

I haven't been to the forums lately, so I may be sticking my foot in my mouth, but I would like to see a section somewhere for the newbies. You guys are Tablet evangelists, but I think you need to do some discipling, too. Give us some real-life reasons and uses for mobile-devices, and for me, Tablet PC. I love my Tablet, but I would like to be getting more out of it, if possible.

I enjoy the podcasts, and especially the inkshows, CES was great coverage. Keep those coming. I like to see the "hands on" articles. I also like to hear what the specs are on the actual device you are reviewing- like which processor is Matt using on the M700?

These are all little things, and none of them will keep me away. :) I appreciate that you all are willing to look for ways to improve. I hope you don't have to call in the Red Cross. :)

Not a major thing, but I've been catching up on missed news a couple of times and gotten to the bottom of the page and thought "well where do I go now?" before realizing that I need to scroll up and hit the calendar. Thus, I think that a link to the previous page of news at the bottom would be a nice simple addition

I'd like to see more content on how you all actually use your mobile tech devices on a day to day basis.
I like seeing what you pack in your gadget bag and what and how your installed software is used.

I agree with Steven in seeing more real-life examples of how we can get the most out of our mobile technology and seeing everything linked together, and I agree with RodFather on software.

I love the inkshows and podcasts. I love the personal experiences you guys give. I wish I could get more of those examples, but I still think this site is great.

I'd like to see more "hands-on" usage scenarios as well. Not so much specs which have already been shared or can be easily looked up but more "real world" usage scenarios.

I'm not all that interested in how many USB slots a device has as I am with how does it "feel" to do XYZ?

Does OneNote do Y better than EverNote? What software have you stumbled across that you get real value over MAJOR BRAND and why? How does stylus C feel compared with stylus J? It's not the hardware, it's the user experience.

I know Warner has a Sprint Mogul, but that kind of news is few and far between. Like A Fan said, talk more about all mobile devices. Like what kind of cell phone is Sierra using right now? What about you Rob? And most importantly, why? How have you tweaked it or not to make it more useful?

I guess, the nutshell, more opinions, usage scenarios, how-to and less stuff about hardware specifications.
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 6:41:14 PM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
What they all said. Since we can't actually see and touch these devices in person and they are usually quite expensive, and technology changes so often, I think more hardware and software usage situations, would instill more confidence in the "non-geek" trying to make a buying decision or simply get more out of their purchase. James Kendrick did a couple of great articles on his real world usage of his tablet and it was great. If someone happened to have a working style like his that person would gain confidence in his/her purchase I would think because of his "day in the life" stories.

The inkshow and podcasts are simply awesome!!! More is better.

I find the animated ads very distracting, and the slow page load is annoying.

Making it easier to navigate to older posts at the bottom of the page would be nice too. I never did find that calendar widget to do this.

I like it when interesting threads on the forum are highlighted on the main page. I don't usually have time to monitor the forums, but there is good stuff there. I'm also continually amazed at how helpful people are there. Maybe just highlighting that it's a good resource to employ to get ideas about devices, accessories, options etc. would help to grow that community further.

I second the comment about the comments being buried. You really have to work to get at 'em which is probably why there usually aren't many comments left.

The inkshows are great. There's no way most of us will ever have time to try out all these crazy gadgets and the software applications that come and go. It also archives interesting stuff that is out there because as we all know in a few years most of these devices and software will be practically unobtainable in their present form.

Great site - I am glad to have discovered it.

It's a minor thing but I would appreciate better tags on your podcasts. Those that use smart playlists etc. to organize and sync podcasts rely on predictable and consistent tags. For example. a couple of your podcasts are tagged with "Blues" as a genre (I think this is the default in some audio software - first alphabetically). I'll never hear these as only files tagged as podcast are synced to my audio player.

If you always use the same tag for artist and album, it will be easier to find the files in WMP. You could put the hosts names in the track Title. Thanks for listening!

-Maybe show some practical use of using a tablet pc in real scenarios.

-Show someonee actually writing and using a tablet pc program...ei Onenote.
Many of the demos are screen captures of writing, not showing the person
actually writing and interacting with the program

-I enjoy reading your site and watching the ink shows. I don't have high
speed connection and some of the files are too big to download.
Can you offer a lo-res or smaller file option?

Despite I'm a Tablet fan I think the CES coverage was amazing, however you are more than 3 people, so i was expecting you to cover not only the worls of tablet PCs. CES is a huge windows of technology, not only tablet PCs.

You are making a great job, but i think you can improve it.

Cheers,

Carlos

Based on your feedback, we've already implemented two changes:

*
Clicking on the page title now takes you directly to the comments. We are going to watch the performance on the site after implementing this change. If it negatively impacts performance, we'll put it back. dasBlog documentation suggests not implementing that feature on high-traffic blogs. Guess we'll soon see.
*
We've added Older / Newer post links to the bottom of the page. Those links will let you page through older posts that don't appear on the homepage. You can also use the calendar option on the right, as well, to navigate to specific days.

Keep it coming - we're listening.

I actually think you do a good job in covering devices other than tablet pc's -- the UMPC coverage, the inkshow introducing CaptureX, and so on.

However, one doesn't get the feel in reading the board that there is any organization making sure that other devices are covered. That may be completely wrong, but it's the feeling that I at least get when I come here (which usually is several times a day.) Right now, for example, Sierra has had an Epos pen since somewhere around CES, and Warner has CaptureX for about that time too, and there is no sense as to when there might be reviews and/or inkshows.

This is a small thing, but you do so much so well that it is small things that are the improvements I can see being made.

Kudo's for all you do, and thanks for trying to improve on that!

Overall, I agree with the "expanded coverage" approach. I think you can do that while staying true to the tablet. :)

I second the flash ads criticism. They do slow down the page loading times; when I go to the site, daily, I just expect a bit of a hang before the homepage loads. For some reason the OQO ads with the guy walking were the most guilty slow-load culprits.

I'm a huge fan of the site though and I read your postings constantly! I'd love to see more video reviews and audio podcasts, but I know all of you have lives, jobs, etc. :)

About five days ago I bought an iPod Touch and have using it constantly to look at this site.
With this device it is not as easy to get to the top of the page, How about placing a TOP icon on the lower left corner.
And on this area of comments how about the capability of "editing" the text after "save comment", as well as a "preview" before posting.
I typed this on the Touch, by the way.

I love the site. I was visiting for several months before I actually started posting anything.

I know I've mentioned several times already that the load time drives me nuts. NUTS!

As far as content goes, I would love to see an area on smartphones. While there are many sites that discuss them, I'd love to hear what you all have to say and what software you're using. I always hated phones until I got my Tilt and now it's attached to me wherever I go.

I also agree with others that comparisons between products would be fantastic. I know the market changes constantly, but being able to compare two software packages, stylus pens, etc. would be a terrific addition.

At the same time, I don't think you should branch out too far. All of the things I've mentioned have been in posts at one point or another, I'd just like to see more. If you focused too much on catering to everyone's wants, it would take a good deal of the personal touch from the site. With every InkShow and editorial we learn more about each of you and that's a large part of what makes this site AWESOME!

I'm a big fan and read the site regularly and have participated a bit recently in the forums. As several of the other posters have suggested, I'd like more information on real world, nitty gritty things. What do you do on your Tilt or iPhone versus what you do on your OQO versus your notebook?

This is VERY minor, but I use Bloglines to read your RSS feed, and it doesn't "stay in the screen," i.e. I have to scroll horizontally to read all the text, which isn't the case with most of my other feeds. Perhaps this is a Bloglines issue, but I noticed that I have the problem with IE7, but not with Safari?

I think your concern about diluting what you currently do with major expansion in coverage is well founded, but you guys have a better idea than we do about how much more you think you can safely take on without losing your core.

Thanks for all you do!! And Warner, my Touch should arrive today, thanks again for the input.

More smartphone coverage! To be truly mobile I want to be able to get more integration between Office 2k7 and Office Mobile for Windows Smartphone and you lovely MVP's are likely to be the best people for discussing and promoting requests/problems to MS.

I second on someone's post about software reviews. I want to know why InkSeine is better than OneNote, and more depth into reviews of software (The hardware reviews are spot on!).
Friday, February 01, 2008 9:50:17 AM (Mountain Standard Time, UTC-07:00)
Hey, thanks for fixing the Bloglines scrolling issue!! Small things make such a difference. I noticed that today I couldn't control click the main title to open a new window to Gottabemobile.com, now it just opened a blank page?

@asirlusgeek: hmm...I'm not sure I did anything to fix the bloglines issue. I did install a new version of dasblog. Maybe that did it.

Can you explain the control click issue - I'm not following. This doesn't sound like a GBM specific issue. almost sounds like a browser issue to me. I can control click an article title to pop it up in another window with no problem

Something I'd like to see is some display of the forum threads on the main page. Content is what "sells" the website and oftentimes, the only way you'll know is if you go through each of the forums. There's a lot of great content in the forums and it should be highlighted. I'm not saying put up the text necessarily, but putting up the headlines when a new post is made might be useful.
