Update on my iPhone

- Sierra Modro

iPhone For those of you following along at home, I bought an Apple iPhone 16GB last Sunday. With my extensive 1 week of experience, I thought I'd give a quick update.

I love it. :)

My definition of a really great mobile device is: Any device that does what you want it to do. Now, since different people want different things out of their mobile devices, that creates both some creative designs and some heated debates. For me, the iPhone does what I want it to do, at least 98% of the time. Thus far my only complaints have been the problem with sending email through Yahoo Small Business accounts and no good way to post to GBM. However, the rich Internet experience more than makes up for those inconveniences.

I took a 3-day weekend vacation this weekend. I took my iPhone, my AT&T 8525, and my Fujitsu P1610. The 8525 I never turned on. I actually didn't intend to take it but I forgot and left it in my purse. The P1610 was my safety blanket. I was glad I had it since I had to repost my iLiad InkShow and I could do that with just a simple button click from the backup on that system. I also took my iPhone. It was my constant companion. I used it extensively over the weekend to check business hours, get dinner reservations, waste time, compare prices from the shops, you name it. I felt like a commercial. This was exactly the usage model that I envisioned from a UMPC, only I got it from my iPhone. I never used even 50% of the battery in a day. This is exactly what I would hope for this kind of device. My husband was impressed with what I could do with the iPhone, even if he does think I'm obsessed right now. He's probably right.

Good technology is technology that does what you want it to do. And the iPhone seems to be fitting my needs very nicely.

Wait a second... I'm confused...

You can't post to GBM from it? That's sad, and more importantly-- puzzling. I distinctly remember seeing a commercial where this cute girl insisted she blogged after every rehearsal (she was a dancer or actress or something artsy).

I'm sorry, I just can't let go of my Apple hatred. Maybe I just need some therapy. :) But I will say this-- I love the browser, in general, and nothing I've found on Windows Mobile can even come close to it (yet), but otherwise, I still like my Sprint Mogul. :)

Well, there's a couple of things in play there. Technically, it would probably be possible, but I would run into the most glaring ommission from the iPhone - no cut and paste. Therefore, copying in links would be painful at best. (Yes, this is a bizarre and idiotic thing to have omitted!!!)

If you are doing social blogging, then linking to other sites isn't an issue. It's also likely that you're using Blogger or one of the other major sites. Those sites typically have special iPhone support so it's quite easy to do.

GBM is currently using dasBlog, which does not have special iPhone support. I could probably use Safari to log in and post, but it would be more difficult. If we change the hosting software, then I'll be pushing for improved mobile posting support.

The iPhone is just a pretty $600 toy that if you drop once on thick carpet it breaks. It should be called the "iDrop" and now it’s broken. So if you have one, its one drop away from cellphone boneyard.

You wouldn't really want to post entries from your iPhone anyway. I left a comment on my blog from an iPhone at the Apple Store. Worked fine, but the thing is just too small to use for heavy typing.

VT808: Whatever. I've broken a phone, Pocket PC, and Tablet PC with less than that.

Sumocat - with the rumored Bluetooth keyboard, posting would be fast and easy. I can dream...

VT808 - knock on wood - I've never broken something by dropping it. I'm frankly not too worried about it. Everything is fragile.

This feels sacreligious somehow on this site---but I have found my new iphone to be the constant companion in such a way that I am now selling my very beloved OQO 02--packing it up tonight for shipment to London. The extra that the OQO can do will be felt at times but so will the extra (always with me no matter what, even the OQO can't do that) of the iphone. I can't justify having both expecially with the $60 per month sprint evdo bill. So goodbye OQO 02, the iphone has taken your place. Email and calendar are actually easier on the iphone than OQO and it plays music and my beloved e-books.

This time around Apple wisely avoided tablet computers in favor of an ubiquitous phone.

We had a long weekend as well. My wife's godmother (85 years young) asked us if we'd take her to her son's cabin up in the mountains. When we arrived at the parking place she said:
'So much snow! Can you take some video on your phone of me walking through the snow up to the cabin?"
'This isn't an iphone, of course I can. It takes video in VGA resolution,' I replied.
When we arrived at the cabin she asked if I could take some decent photos and send them to her son's phone.
'This isn't an iphone, of course I can. It has a five megapixel camera with proper optics,' I replied.
Later on she was sitting on the veranda wrapped in blankets taking in the sun.
'Can I listen to some music on your phone? I don't want any wires hanging down and getting caught up in the blankets,' she said.
'This isn't an iphone, of course you can listen without wires everywhere. I'll just switch on the stereo bluetooth headphones.'
On the way home she asked in bweilderment: 'Why would anybody spend a lot of money on a phone that doesn't have these basic features?'
'Kids these days must put looks over functionality,' was the only answer I could come up with. :)
