What's That on Sierra's Desk?

- Sierra Modro

Wacom&OQO Yes, you see what I had previously described in a podcast as my dream setup for home - an OQO Model 02 paired with a Wacom Cintiq 12WX digitizer monitor. I've only had the two together for a couple of days, but already I can tell that these two make a marvelous pairing - the ultimate portability of the OQO combined with the usability of the 12.1" widescreen format 12WX running in 1280x800 mode. After installing the software drivers for the 12WX, the OQO automatically configured the 12WX to the correct native resolution when I plugged it in the first time. After a quick calibration, I was off and writing. Simple and beautiful.

I plan on doing an InkShow on the Wacom Cintiq 12WX in the next week or so where you'll get to see exactly how well it performs. But so far, I've been very impressed with this combination of mobility and desktop functionality with a responsive pen. Let me know what questions you have on this setup!

I am soooo jealous! Can't wait to see the ink show that actually shows them both in action.

I want TWO of them!!! Very nice! That is just awesome. I'm intentionally putting off my OQO Model 02 gadget envy until after we deploy InkSeine because it will never get finished if I get one of them now!!!

FYI, if the OQO has more than one USB port (I'm not sure about that) be careful which port you plug the Cintiq into when plugging/unplugging. I ran into some issues with that on my computer when I tried to get a dual monitor 21" Wacom Cintiq setup going in my office. The Wacom driver uninstall doesn't remove all of its registry keys and eventually I had to go in by hand and delete them all to get even my (current) one Cintiq display to work correctly. I had to give up on the 2-display setup for the time being, but I hope to take another crack at it when I get some more time. There are other people in Microsoft Research who have gotten it to work, though, so it can be done!

I also had issues with Vista getting confused about which display went with which digitizer sometimes after a reboot/system update. I'd love to know if you encounter that too, but I hope you don't because this setup just looks like something to drool over.

As much as I like my 21" Cintiq I find it is actually not that great for heavy duty inking because I can't tilt and move the tablet around while I am sketching (this is something that most artists do). Also it is cumbersome enough to tilt it down into the drafting board mode that I rarely do it. With the 12" display tablet I can see all of that being a lot easier.

Ken - I have the monitor plugged into the docking station, so I haven't really had a plug/unplug kind of situation. But I may try it out and see what happens, just in case. I also plan to try it with my P1610 (passive digitizer) to see whether it will really work as a proper Tablet PC with this awesome monitor. If it will, I may have to get one for the office. :)

Also, does the twelve-inch Cintiq pen work on the OQO, and vice versa?

My 21" Cintiq Pen doesn't work on my Tablet PC's and that drives me bonkers.
