GottaBeMobile.com InkShow: Fujitsu U810 Review

- Matt Faulkner

fujitsuU810 There have been many reviews of the Fujitsu U810 around the net over the past few weeks, but now it's my time to take a look.  The reviews have been all over the spectrum with some dissatisfied and others really like the new little device.   I had this device over a weekend to give a once over and by the end of the weekend, I really liked Darth Vader.

Today in this InkShow I take everyone for a quick overview of the U810.  I run thru the external features to show the ports and layout of the device.  Then, I do a comparison with some computer gadgets to really give you an idea on how small the device.  Then we go into the keyboard - if your hands are on the larger side, you might want to watch this part of the InkShow as it's really small to try and type on.  The next part of the video is a little dark, but I am trying to show the screen and it does a good job. In the end, I liked the Inking on the U810, it just took some getting used to how I had to rest my hand on the screen.

I agree with your opinion on the orientation for inking, and was wondering if the mouse button could be disabled?

What? weird video.
Why do the U810's USB port and Matt's wedding ring appear to be on the RIGHT?
The whole video is inverted/reversed.

Matt, thanks for doing a really outstanding job of showing the U810 in a very practical way. Your presenting style is very enjoyable. You actually gave a real world look at the inking, which I have not seen so extensively anywhere else. The issues with the sound, first topping out, and then finally, very quiet in the closing, are all that stand in the way of this being a superb Inkshow. I appreciate this so much! And I want one! Ah, next year, maybe.

I've seen every u810 video on the web and i must admit that this was the weakest. Besides being inverted, the audio was off, the specs were never mentioned, and the performance (or lack of) was never mentioned. How's Vista? any issues with software? tried any SD or CF cards to see how the work? what accessories came with it? are they useful? Did you search the web to see what issues other users/reviewers had?

Comparing the sizes to an external drive? The drives themselves vary all over the place. How about holding up a Coke can? a composition notebook, a plain white sheet of paper? Something that ALL of have around.

When you're describing the product, try not to SHAKE it in front of the camera.

Check out the one done by Canadian Public TV. IT's the one that sold me on the U810.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just pointing out some areas that need improvement.

Gang - Sorry about part of the video being inverted. This was a whirlwind tour over a short weekend - Got it Friday aftenoon and had to ship it out Monday morning. The issue wasn't caught untill the unit was probably in somebody's hands across the country...

Gene - As for comparing objects - I tried to hit things that 'most' people can relate to - general size of a external 2.5 inch hard drive. They do vary some, but most of them are the same general size that if somebody has/has seen one they should be able to relate the size. And a CD, I would think that would be something that almost everybody can relate to.

And the audio - that is a result of the embedded video - once it fully loads the audio is in sync. I have seen it before myself.

Knowing that the U810 has been around a while, and that we can get the spec sheet in a dozen places on this site and others, Matt kindly focused on the things GBM members asked about. It wasn't meant to be a full review.

And comparison to a professional television production is hardly fair.

Folks, comparing these devices with a composition notebook... why does something that simple sound so profound?

It would be useful to compare the size and the thickness to a composition notebook. Tablet PCs could be compared to 3 and 5 subject notebooks.
