Outlook 2007 Gadgets For Windows Sidebar

- Warner Crocker

SidebarGadgets_thumb_1If you’d like to have your Outlook info from the To-Do Bar always available to you now you can. If you’re using the SideBar in Vista, that is. There is now two SideBar Gadgets available: Outlook Appointments and Outlook Tasks.

The appointment gadget shows you up to 5 of your future appointments. The task gadget shows you your tasks and is scrollable and has some customization available. You can also add a new task to the list. You can check out more info here and download the gadgets from the Windows Live Gadget Gallery.

Of course the real question for many mobile users is if they have turned off the Sidebar or not. I know many who have.

I've been using the appointments gadget for many months now.

I only keep sidebar running on my laptop that has been converted into a desktop. I have an additional LCD screen hooked up to the laptop and I keep the appointments gadget on the extra screen. It's great to be able to glance at the screen and see what I have coming up.

I do not like the fact that after a reboot you need to click on the gadget to populate the appointments and this is sometimes a slow process. Other than that it is a great plugin.

Yeah this has been out for several months. Don't rely on the Outlook blog for news (which is where I assume you got it cause they just posted about this today). They always post about old stuff that people mostly already know about.

The reason I don't use it? Because it still doesn't show all day appointments like the to-do bar. Oh and why would a mobile user turn off the sidebar? It's not like it takes up screen space when you're not using it.

Rob: Trust me, you wouldn't want to try to read inked appointments scaled down to fit in the side bar. You'd go blind!
