DIY Kit for Geeks

- Sierra Modro

BUGbase So maybe you have some pretty firm opinions about what ought to be included in your mobile device. Maybe you outgrew your Lego MindStorms and need a new challenge.  Bug Labs, based in New York and San Francisco, is there to give you your best geeky experience. Scheduled to ship by the end of the year, the new BUGbase and it's snap on components allow you to quickly create a highly specialized device - specialized to your needs, that is.

Scheduled to release later this year are the BUGBase, the base module onto which everything else attaches. The BUGbase is a full Linux computer, "equipped with a fast CPU, 128MB RAM, built-in WiFi, rechargeable battery, USB, Ethernet, and a small LCD with button controls." There will be a limited number of snap on modules available at release, including a GPS, digital camera/videocam, accelerometer and motion sensor, and, best of all, a touch sensitive color LCD screen. Coming in Q1 2008, expect a larger touch screen, mini keyboard, audio speaker and in/out jacks, and a teleporter. (Okay, I was with them until the teleporter, but I have no idea what that will be.) Also available is the BUG Module Interface (BMI) to make it easy to program all of your snap on modules.

Maybe with this kind of do-it-yourself kit, everyone can finally get their perfect ultra mobile PC. Nah.
