Dell about Tablet PC: "We're Coming"

- Warner Crocker

Jeff Clarke, Senior VP and General Manager of Dell’s Business Product Group has posted a video on the Direct 2 Dell blog to basically end the speculation and let the world know that Dell is entering the Tablet PC market. In his words, “it is designed for the education, health care, and corporate marketplace” and “is one of the lightest weight convertible Tablets.”  He ends the video by saying simply, “We’re coming.”

Note that this is being aimed at the business markets and not the consumer market.

Seems weird to use a widescreen aspect ratio on a "non-consumer" tablet.

I'm sure they'll shake things up a little though.

I like what I see so far. Looks quite thin. Notice the words "pen and touch"

Is there any widescreen tablets out there in the market? I don't know if I would like that aspect ratio in portrait mode...

The Gateway E155C is a a newly announced widescreen, as was Gateway's previous model. Toshiba's R400 is a widescreen. HP's newly announced 2710P is also a widescreen.

I also caught the "pen and touch" phrase, Rob! But please clarify: If it is aimed at the business verticals, does that mean I, as a consumer, will not have access to purchase one of these?

Is there a need for an plastic screen protector for a tablet like this (multi-touch). i was a little worried that a fingernail or even the pen may scratch the screen. I was looking at the lenovo x60.

Isbeller, of course you can buy them (kinda stupid for them to not offer them to all with the spare cash). It basically means that its design, promotion, and price point are all geared towards the business side of things and nothing else.

A Dell Tablet may sound great, but consider that Dell is going to make it, the same company that is notorious for bad tech support and service, that discontinued its successful Axim line of Pocket PC and ignored a very large community of loyal fans, and who may decide after one year of making a tablet to just drop it altogether. My last Dell notebook never really functioned properly. So until Dell figutres out what it wants to be when it grows up, no thanks.
