Dell XT Tablet PC Specs Leaking Out

- Rob Bushway

Engadget has the goods on the Dell XT Tablet PC:

  • Single or dual-core Intel ULV CPUs (with integrated graphics)
  • LED-backlit WXGA 1280 x 800 display option
  • Outdoor viewing WXGA 1280 x 800 display option
  • Pen and touch support (digitizer and touchscreen)
  • (3) USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet (duh), 1394, VGA out
  • WiFi options up to 802.11n, optional Bluetooth
  • Optional 3G (HSDPA, EV-DO Rev. A)
  • ExpressCard slot, optional Smart Card slot, fingerprint reader
I'm liking the LED backlight, WXGA, FireWire, multi-mode screen, and optional 3G. Can't wait to get my hands on that puppy. Antimatter has a forum thread going on here to talk about it. I'm curious, too - what's up with that beveled edge on the casing? And, what's up with XP on the picture? Everyone knows the best thing about Vista is the Tablet PC support.

Question for our readers: In your opinion, how does this fair against the Lenovo X61, HP's 2710p, Gateway E295C, and the Fujitsu T4220? Personally, I think the LED-backlit is a real differentiator, and they seem to be hitting their competitors feature for feature. I've used a couple of computers with a LED backlit, and the screen clarity and brightness is a huge plus.

UPDATE: I've removed the picture because our source is telling us that the XT looks nothing like the unit pictured on Engadget.

With the sole exception of the dual pen/touch screen, it sounds like my new HP 2710p. But no camera or pop-out light for night use...

Question: Does the 2710p have LED backlit? I had heard reports the screen was a little grainy.

"Everyone knows the best thing about Vista is the Tablet PC support."

But the best thing about XP Tablet is the driver support, application support, memory use (IE XP takes less to do the same work) and no UAC.
IMO there's no compelling reason to go with Vista until they come out with SP1 and maybe not then. Time will tell.
While I would like to have the TIP improvements in Vista, the rest of the OS costs too much right now for me to switch.

Yes, the 2710p has LED backlight. My 1610 screen is a WHOLE lot more grainy than the 2710p, at least with my subjective viewing.

I really like the LED, too, but if Vista was not at least an option, forget it.

A nice pairing with the LED would be an SSD...should make the battery life very nice. I doubt that Dell would even consider it, since they seem to be on the trailing edge of new technology lately...took them long enough to come out with a Tablet PC. The LED backlight seems to contradict this observation, though.

I can't tell on the picture, but wouldn't Dell want to put some hotkeys around the screen? I don't see any, and I don't remember if there were any on the video that came out in the spring.

What will score big points is the price below the other brands. If it is the same or higher Iamnot sure-but if it is significantly lower in price-this could be real good news for Tablet future.

This is the kind of negativity people who never use vista spread about vista. Driver support is fine, application support is a non-issue, more memory is used due to pre-fetch (which increases performance), and UAC is unobtrusive (you only ever see it when you're installing applications or messing with core options).
