Exchange on the iPhone - Big News

- Matt Faulkner

I am following the news over on Engadget - HUGE news with Exchange Activesync being licensed by Apple.  I am sure more details will follow, but this is a game changer for sure.

Looks like my Tilt's days might be numbered...  Anyone else holding out for Exchange support before buying an iPhone??  I sure have been - we'll have to see how and when this all plays out...

I have been waiting for this feature. It makes all the different int he world to me. Except my company might soon be moving to Connectwise and I know they have a windows mobile app, I'll have to check to see if they have anything that works with the iPhone. If they can convince companies to start releasing apps based on the SDK they released, it will big in winning over several vertical markets at a time.

I wonder if this means that we will able to sync our Outlook tasks. That's what I miss most since I have been using the Iphone.

I am positively thrilled by this announcement. I agree with Brad - it makes all the difference in the world for me. I'm going to have to check this out when the new software release comes out. Wow...

Until it runs on Verizon I can't use it. I wonder with the Verizon announcement of opening it's network to any hardware, if I could run it on Verizon at some point. Anyone know how this will work?

If any of you want to send me your Tilt when you upgrade, I'd be happy to accept. :)

No mention of exchange synch of tasks. I guess they left it out to leave an opportunity for third party programmers to get some of that $100M VC money...

The new Office for the Mac 2008 Entourage doesn't synch tasks with the exchange server either.

It's hard to GTD with no task synching on your phone...

ActiveSync by its very nature synchronizes Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and of course-- email, but as JNZ has pointed out even Entourage doesn't sync Tasks, so who knows. I would be willing to bet, however, that they will include Tasks in the iPhone sync.

That said, with regards to the announcement, I'm actually impressed that they finally caved in on the issue. This finally makes the iPhone a reasonably corporate-friendly device, and it certainly makes my job a whole lot easier when people come to me begging for help with it. With the announcement of the SDK, this also makes it more attractive. Although how many developers will actually port their work to it remains to be seen, it is still a good start.

All in all, I'll never own an Apple product-- I'll stick with the Tilt and Mogul devices (and other Windows Mobile devices)-- but it's still nice to see Apple expanding beyond their consumer-oriented focus.

They mentioned syncing everything but tasks, so I'm not so sure.

Exchange is one of the two biggest reason I was holding off on the iPhone. The other is fast data connection, and a different carrier besides Sprint.

I think they're announcing a faster iPhone in June that can handle all the exchange downloads. How long is their contract with at&t?
