Firefox 3 Release Candidate Now Available

- Warner Crocker

FirefoxIf Firefox is your browser of choice, looks like we’re getting closer to version 3. They’ve recently made the Release Candidate available. Because I’ve been so busy this winter/spring I’ve not checked out any of the betas on Firefox 3, but I might just check out the Release Candidate. Remember they are still working things out and the Release Candidate, although a public preview, is intended for developer testing. But if you’re a bleeding edge kind of guy/gal, have fun.

Here’s the link.

I have been using the 3.0 betas since versions since Beta 1, all the way through beta 5. I used to use FF 1-1.5, but those and version 2 were memory hogs, sometimes taking almost 1 gb of RAM up! But FF 3 has been great, right now with 5 tabs open I am sitting at a stable 115Mb of RAM used. I had forgotten how good the experience was with using FF, but it is even better now with all of the excellent add-ons. I highly recommend it, especially on lower powered machines. Add-ons like no-script and adblock speed browsing significantly.

This is a release candidate, meaning that this version may be the release version if no major problems are found. It still has the same deal-breaker for me of the Google Toolbar not working. When you try to install it you get the message: "Google Toolbar for Firefox 3.0.20070525W could not be installed because it not compatible with Firefox 3.0."

I'm not going to install this on any tablets until this issue is fixed. It is hard to tell from the outside whether the delay reflects a lack of interest by Google or by Mozilla.

Does grab and drag work on the current Firefox 3.0 release?

@Yonatan

It gets updated as each beta comes out, so has worked up to Beta 5 but not yet with RC1. Usually is updated a few days after each release so hopefully in a few days.
