First Post From The M700 Tablet PC - Screen Resolution

- Matt Faulkner

Just installed Messenger and Live writer on the M700 so I can use this Tablet PC to post and chat :)

So one of the main concerns I have about switching to the M700 (or any other wide screen 12" Tablet) is the resolution.  I have a thing for wanting to see a TON of data on my screen - even if it means it's really small...  My previous standard laptop was a 15" 1600x1200 screen Dell - since then I have been with Toshiba's M4 14" 1400x1050, the Toshiba M400 12" 140x1050 and then the Lenovo 12" 1400x1050.  As you can tell I love the high res screens - and they are becoming few and far between...

Enter the 1280x800 screen on the M700.  What do I think?  I don't mind it so far - I actually kind of like it, I don't have Visual Studio or my GIS / CADD software installed just yet though - I'll let you know again after that!

For High-Res screen lovers like myself, I have posted a few shots of common programs to give everyone a feel of what the real estate on the screen is really like.

How about a screenshot in portrait? Especially of OneNote.

Hmm...I think I'd have to see that resolution in person. Unless I switch to Full Page View in OneNote on my x61t, I find that each line I write wants to extend just a tad bit out of my view unless I scroll. It seems like I might feel squished for space with that resolution. And yes, I'm a High-Res screen lover.

For me the wide screen makes up for the lower overall screen resolution -- especially since there's so much available on sidebars these days (like in OneNote) and your actual writing space doesn't get overly cramped unless you go crazy with the top and bottom toolbars. So, as far as I'm concerned, the real estate shown in your screenshots is pretty good (i.e. being able to see much more than the width of a Microsoft Word page at 100%). Things might be different in portrait mode but since it's so easy to zoom down to, say, 75-80% (which I do with Excel anyway) and the screen's DPI is pretty good, that shouldn't be much of a problem either.

Thanks for the portrait screenshots. Yes, that does look a little cramped but, with the sidebars gone, it's not bad at all. You don't usually have sidebars open when inking, do you? And if you were doing mostly reading, you could always zoom out just a little bit.

That said, other than zooming out, what's cool with the touch version (I would imagine) is be the ability to quickly scroll left and right using your finger should you be viewing, say, a wide web page or something.

I do agree with Ameel on the screen width. It looks quite nice. I do keep my toolbars on the side of my screen fairly small. I find though that keeping things, such as Drawing toolbar in OneNote, on the side of my screen rather than on the top is helpful when I'm writing. It's much easier for me to move my hand to the right and tap a button than move my entire arm up to the top of the screen and tap. It will be interesting to hear what folks that use the widescreen say after they've used it for a bit, particularly because I value my screen resolution so much in both directions.

Portrait is way too narrow IMHO... More like a band than a page :) I'll stick with classic proportions of my X60t 1400x1050 (even there I'd wish it wider in portrait)

Ameel is making a lot of good points on screen reel estate.

The trick with OneNote in Portrait is to go full screen. I really wish Microsoft would give more control over OneNote's sidebars. Remember, though, you can always customize the full screen toolbar to include next page/section navigation controls if you normally stay out of full screen for that reason.

I didn't even realise there was a full screen mode in Onenote. kicking myself as it's so obvious, and I use fullscreen mode for other progs, Acrobat etc., lol.

Ah well, another tip to improve my inking experience!

Has anyone any bad points on the M700 as I've got my M400 running nicely and must...resist...upgradeitus.....

As I type this post on my M700, I have yet to find something that I don't like that can't be fixed... although I realize that doesn't help you...... :P

Great job Matt, thanks for the screen shots.

I'm pretty happy with my M400 as well, and I love the 1400x1050 resolution. I should be getting the M700 in a few days, the resolution is the only thing that worries me.

How's the battery life with Vista? better, worse, same as M400 with XP?

@Tariq

The worst thing about the M400 with Vista is the Bios you need to use as it causes the fan to run full whack and seems to affect battery life. I get around 2 hours on a new battery, maybe 4 hours with the slice (On 'balanced' mode). I'd imagine the M700 with Vista to be similar or better than the M400 with XP on battery life but GT2L can advise you better.

Matt, would you please post a picture of your Gottabemobile website in portrait mode please?
