Fujitsu Dismisses Flash Memory Performance, Reliability; Favors HDD Over SSD

- Truc Bui

Longtime GBM forum member and community participant Gavin Miller has just sent this intriguing article from Computerworld who interviewed Joel Hagberg, Fujitsu's Vice President of business development. In the face of stiffening competition in the SSD market and with prices dropping and capacity increasing across the board for SSD, Fujitsu has chimed in with reasons as to why the company has resisted the industry trend of shifting towards a solid state medium. Of course, as a manufacturer of HDD's, Fujitsu has a vested interest in the HDD market, but it still makes an interesting read in terms of how far SSD's still have to go to displace the traditional HDD. Thanks Gavin!

Until there is a real demand for SSD the investors of HDD will continue to promote their HDD. They must continue to profit from something people want/need to use. They will "milk the cow" so to speak until HDD become a thing of the past.

Hmm, my take on it is that the 5400 rpm and up drives they use on their mainstream products offer acceptable performance - but the teeny-weeny 4200 rpm drives they use on the U810 have got to go!

Also, I'm very suspicious about *what* flavour of SSD will ultimately win the price war - MLC seems more reliable, but not necessarily the fastest.
