GBM InkShow: InkSeine

- Rob Bushway

"To seine is to fish with a net. To fish for results from ink is not insane, but rather InkSeine!" What a great definition for this prototype note-taking application being released by Microsoft Research.

InkSeine is a Tablet PC note-taking application designed and built from ground up around the pen, with the ability to easily search the web or your local computer directly from your ink. The search interface is unlike anything I've ever worked with in the past, with the ability to narrow or expand the results based on file type or date with a simple flick of the pen. It is such a joy to use an application where the box was built around the pen rather than making the pen fit the box.  As such, InkSeine is quickly becoming my go-to application for ink note-taking.

InkSeine will be free and will be released to the general public on February 15th. It is not a supported Microsoft product. The  best way to get support for InkSeine will be through the product page, Ken's blog, and through our GBM forums where Ken frequently visits and comments. There is extensive help and plenty of video tutorials on the product page and in the application itself, as well.

How well does InkSeine work for passive pen tablets?

It actually works quite well. Because the actions are press and drag and not totally reliant upon hover, it is well suited for passive as well. In this current build, though, the pen shows up as a mouse pointer. I expect that to be addressed at some point in the future.

one other comment on passive - the only downside I've experienced is the limited inking area for 800 x 480 displays. Because the inking space cannot be increased and page scrolling is not supported ( making the page longer ), there is obviously less inking space available then say on a 1024 x 768 screen. Again, this is likely an issue that will be addressed in future builds.

Note that in addition to the Doodler thread, there is another thread about InkSeine, OneNote and Journal in the software forum. Ken presents an extended discussion of his group's charter and what InkSeine is about...

Rob is so right on JKontheRUN: Inkseine is a perfect replacement for Journal and definitely complementary to Onenote.

Looks like a good technical demonstration and interface but what's it really for? Would you really use Inkseine search versus standard Vista search, which isnt really that difficult to use. Basically to me it seems like a Journal replacement

Well it looks like a lot more than a simple replacement for Journal to me. You can imbed links, search directly from ink, insert image clipping of any application, and utilize what I can only describe as a revolutionary pen based interface.

If you haven't done so already, then please view the 30 minute video review. I didn't understand the true value of InkSeine until I saw this review. The interface and clipping tool is incredible.

Now I am counting the days until I can I can download InkSceine. Unless someone (Ken..hint...hint) lets me download the pre-release version.

I'll be installing on my Windows XP Tablet Edition OQO Model 02.

Excellent Inkshow...makes me even more anxious to get my hands on it! Looks like the ultimate brainstorming tool to me. And a heck of a nice doodler!

I did watch the video, but I really dont get the usage scenario. If I'm going to search , I just press start on vista. If I'm going to capture notes I use onenote because it searches and tags and sorts information so well. If I'm going to mind map I'll use Mindmapper or Personal Brain. The way I see it this application is all interace, what I'd prefer is all the apps I actually use to have this interface rather than putting information in yet another application
