GBM InkShow: Kathi Takes On The Lenovo U110 Ultra-Portable

- Rob Bushway

InkShowWhat better way to get to know a piece of new technology than to find out what a non-techie person thinks, right? That is exactly what we aimed for in this InkShow video review featuring my wife, Kathi, and the Lenovo U110.

Kathi has been using the Lenovo U110 Ultra-Portable on and off for the past several weeks, and offers up some surprising insight. In addition, she also has some very interesting things to say about Tablet PCs and why she doesn't want one. The most surprising thing she told me: if the U110 were a Tablet PC, she wouldn't want it. Needless to say, Microsoft and OEMs need to watch this video.

Rob,

This was really an interesting review.

I am glad it comes just AFTER Mother's Day, since I need a new tablet now and, if this came earlier, I'd have been buying one of these for my wife first. Now, I know what she's getting for Christmas.

Great Review and ALL computer manufacturers should look at it. Not once was speed, number of cores, etc etc mentioned but the word pretty was said about 5 times. Your lovely wife has shown us all what most of the manufacturers (except maybe Apple, Lenovo and Sony) don't get. Computers are not about new fangled features and speed. Selling computers to the masses is about looks and usability. Maybe if the manufacturers put more asthetic emphasis into tablets and UMPC's then they may sell a few more.

Also I've heard that Veriface can be circumvented by using a large photo of a persons face rather than the real face. Can you test this?

It's funny that Kathy mentioned she likes pen & paper, b/c it helps her commit things to memory, and that's why i like my tablet for taking notes vs typing my notes. I think my tablet is in laptop mode maybe 90% of the time, and i used it as a slate only when i'm in class taking notes.

When i type notes its GIGO...it passes right through my brain almost, i do remember stuff better when i actually write them.

Also have you let Kathy use the Latitude XT to see what she thinks about the writing experience on that one vs other tablets, and the fact that you can rely less on the pen & more on the touch interface?

oh & another word...tethers...

Wow, Rob, thank you so much for this video! It has been incredibly enlightning, seeing as your wife seems to be like my complete opposite.

I am amazed at her aversion to tablets... though it actually makes sense when you hear it from her. Guess we technology enthusiasts get too much into our own bubble for our own good.

If she likes the feel of paper so much, I would love to see her use (meaning: having you teach her to use) one of those digital pens that write on paper but store what you write in memory. I remember there was one (iogear?) announced a while ago which let you use normal paper, someone at umpcportal forum got one. Would she find a use for it? Or would she hate it as well?

Oh, and I have a question for Kathy: How would she feel if she were able to write on the Kindle? What if she could use a Kindle for note taking?

thanks again Rob

regards,

Cristobal
