GBM InkShow: OQO Model 02 Tablet PC SSD vs HDD

- Rob Bushway

oqocompare1 2007_11_14_23_25_01 001 11_15_2007 12_47 AM_0001 Solid State Drives (SSD) are the future of mobile computing, and if my experience with the SSD based OQO Model 02 is any indication, the future is a fast one.

In this InkShow, I run a series of tests comparing a Model 02 1.6 ghz SSD to a Model 02 1.5 ghz HDD .  The speed differences really show themselves on bootup and application start-up. My own battery experiences indicate about 45 minute to an hour improvement over the HDD based Model 02. FYI: I did try using Battery Eater, but ran into problems with the application.

My thanks to Eddie VanDerbeck for sending me his Model 02 to do comparison testing with.

Here are my results of running HDTune

Model Min Transfer Rate Max Transfer Rate Average Access Time Burst Rate CPU Usage
Model 02 1.6 ghz 32 GB SSD 19.6 mb / sec 46.6 mb / sec 39.8 mb / sec .3 ms 36.6 mb / sec 21.7%
Model 02 1.5 ghz 60 gb 4200 rpm HDD 9.0 mb / sec 22.5 mb / sec 17.8 mb / sec 20.3 ms 50.7 mb /sec 7.1%

Rob,

Bummer on the Battery Eater test. I actually suffered a similar problem when I originally ran it on my Q1 Ultra. I charged it all the way and then ran the test. It got all the way to zero, shut down and when I went back and plugged it in, Battery Eater Pro had recorded nothing. I was so annoyed. It took more than five hours for that test to run and I can up empty. So I did it again, the whole thing, and it worked! Why it failed is beyond me. Hopefully you get a chance to run it again, but if not, oh well. :-)

Now that I've watched the full video... two things...

One... nice job. No doubt that the speed on the SSD was very impressive.
Two... holy cow that thing is loud. I've read the comments about fan noise, but I never saw (heard) it before. Granted, they're both running, so I'm sure they're louder together that it would otherwise be, but wow, that still surprised me.

One final note, having now seen the full video, it looks like you ran right into the same problem I did with Battery Eater. Their website is no help, that's for sure. But again... great job on the video.

Thanks, Stephen. Yeah, the fans are loud - it is my biggest complaint about the Model 02.

You caqn set the unit to quietest setting (most hot) when you have a ssd I have no comparison but my fan seems to run very little, My OQO is often warm but never hot. This might help with battery life too???

You people better improve the quality of your hosts, I've seen only two of your vids, one by Hugo on the 'HTC Flop' and this one, and my, what a disaster.

Also, these tests are far from accurate, from what I saw, the HDD version had a little more usage than the SSD, it even had 2 users, probably had different apps installed and all.
But who cares, most people aren't as demanding as I am.

btw, was that a vacuum on the background? lol.

Like the guy on top said. The slight 100mhz difference im not complaining about. The thing is at least what i got is that the HDD version you own, the SDD version you got from someone for the test. You obviously used the HDD for a while, and you had 2 accounts on it now that does play a difference. I also noticed that you more have programs on the HDD and I am assuming the SDD is barebones. You take two same computers and based on how you used them they will perform fairly different. Im not saying SDD is bad im all for it. The 30min to an hour extra battery life is a disappointment tho I thought it would be a lot more not double but at least half. Great vid by the way better than anywhere else, I love seeing a detailed test. One thing i recommend is changing the player for the fullscreen effect.

why is this a good video? the guy is unfocused, and fumbling. He messed up one test and ended with it's not a big difference. how do we know? that is the point of the video, to see the difference, is digital film so expensive that you can't trash the video and start over? I would be embarased to release this "review" to the masses. here is another hint when you compare two different types of data drives it helps if the pc specs are the same, it also helps if both pc's have a fresh install of windows. if you have been installing apps on one pc for who knows how long, plus it happens to have a slower cpu, of course it's going to take longer to boot up, I could tell you that without even testing or making a video. basicly I am being blunt because I feel cheated, this video was no help at all, I wasn't even entertained, I sat through most of it yelling at the idiot testing in the vid.

Thanks for the comment, Mr. Chidester. I'm sorry you didn't find the video useful. Tests are tests - it was an anecdotal comparision between to similar machines, with SSD / HDD being the differentiator.

btw, Dennis - be sure to look at the graph, too. the bootup examples and the graph affirm each other. sorry you felt cheated - I'll give you back your money....
