GBM Podcast #28: The Naked Truth

- Rob Bushway

Dell's Tablet PC Company PicnicThe news on the street today is the Vista Reliability Pack betas that leaked out yesterday and consequentially squashed by Microsoft today. In Podcast #28, Warner and I cover that topic, the infamous Dell Tablet PC massacre, and honestly discuss that "hole in our lives" that so many companies are striving to fill.

In addition, Warner lets us in on a little secret about his podcasting techniques....

It's funny you guys mention about devices you have to "go back to the house" for. This has happened to me on more than one occasion, and that device for me is my Sony VAIO UX380n. I'm a real estate investor, and the reason why I got an UMPC in the first place was because I needed access to information while on the road. Some of the websites I need to visit are too rich for a mobile phone, or even something like a Nokia N800. I either have to log-around a full laptop/Tablet coupled with the use of my phone as a modem, or just take a little pouch, (carrying case if you will) with my UX which already has WWAN internet access. All I have to do is flip the antenna up, turn-on the device, and I can work from wherever.

One important thing to consider here is that "THE VOID" that's waiting to be filled will be different for everyone. The fact that I can browse some of these content-rich websites on the go, coupled with the fact that I can pull my excel worksheets, word documents, take pictures and use the web-cam interface while I'm on the road is priceless. It's important to mention that both my wife and I have PDA-phones (ppc6700) and I also have a Samsung Q1p sitting at home. But my "gotta-have-with-me" device has been the UX.

There's no question that no device is perfect, and all the ones in the market right now have some shortcomings or imperfections. But we have to keep things in perspective. After all, I'm carrying around a 4.5" screen running on Vista Business, as capable as your average laptop or desktop out there, in a little pouch. Quite amazing if you ask me.

Fascinating and entertaining podcast. Keep it up; you guys do a great job!
