GBM Shortcut: Axiotron ModBook First Looks Video

- Rob Bushway

The Axiotron ModBook arrived today. Here is quick first look at the ModBook. This is NOT a review - it is just a quick look.

By the way, I mentioned how heavy the ModBook was. To compare, the MacBook is 4 lbs 14.5 oz. The ModBook is 5 lbs 8 oz.

I'll be covering the included apps, as well as built-in Apple support for Ink. In addition, I'll have an inkshow on how well this tablet holds up for artists, as well as how it performs as a Windows Vista-based Tablet PC running bootcamp.

Should be fun!!

My God the fan sounds very loud. This is something I e.g. on the OQO model 1 + hated. The fan was so loud that it e.g. at a meeting could not use.

The ModBoock, sounds very loud. What in turn suggests that it produces enormous heat.

I've been running my ModBook now for a while
The fan only really kicks on when I am playing videos
Such as your First Look Video
But otherwise I can't say it is an issue
I run CS3 also

Hi:

I was one of the first to receive the Modbook, so I thought I would mention a couple of things.

- The fan noise has not been an issue for me, except that if you're using the built-in mike on iChat that's it, the other party just hears the fan. It only seems to run hot when viewing long videos or when running Vista under Parallels.

- There is an issue with bluetooth that does not allow it to work correctly in OSX, although it works fine in Vista/XP. Apparently it's an issue with the way the Apple driver is written. I use a tiny bluetooth dongle to get around the issue.

- There is some noise in the audio when playing music from iTunes. It's most noticeable when using headphones and it's my biggest problem with the system.

- Vista and XP run fine under Parallels/VMWare. I had to install the Wacom Penabled drivers for Vista to recognize the digitizer and it still thinks it's a mouse, but the tablet features work fine. Only things that don't work are pen flicks and hold for right-click.

- It really is a dream machine to own, regardless of the small issues I just mentioned. I would prefer if it was ligher, but the heft is because this is a very stiff machine and to have the DVD drive all the time makes it worth the weight. because I always found I had left my external drive when I needed it most with tablets that didn't have a built-in drive.

- I haven't used the GPS a lot, but I can confirm that it works.

- I use Dragon Naturally speaking on Vista running under Parallels in a Bootcamp partition. No problems there. I can also use Evernote and other windows programs with no problems.

- Inkwell needs a LOT of work. I can use it for many things, but when I really need a lot of text, it's easier to use the tiny Apple bluetooth keyboard or a stowaway. MacDictate runs fine on it as well. I wish the handwriting recognition was better.

Here's the deal though. Painting on this computer is another thing altogether. It feels great, there aren't a bunch of cables hanging out of it like with the Cintiqs and I use it anywhere. Throw in a USB wireless broadband module and wow! Everybody asks what it is and how to get one.

I have already done a lot of paintings on it which you can see at:

I would definitely like it to be thinner, I would like it to have a few programmable hardware buttons, I would like for inkwell to work better and I would really like it to be lighter, but you'll have to pry it off my dead hands to take it away.

I can confirm that screen rotation is supported in Windows Vista (installed via Bootcamp or Parallels). The Modbook is a great device for artists, not really designed with mobility in mind.
