GBM Shortcut: Inking Surprisingly Good on the HP tx2051

- Warner Crocker

I'm pleasantly surprised I have to say. When I checked out the HP tx2000 at CES back in January I wasn't turned off by the Inking at all, but now that I have my hands on a review unit HP tx2051, I'm more than pleased with the Inking on this Tablet PC. And yes, it is a Tablet PC. Yes, HP bills it as an Entertainment PC and there is nothing wrong with that. It has tons of bells and whistles and is set up to rock and roll with Windows Media Center. It even comes with a remote.

But what impresses me is the fact that is a touch screen along with an active digitizer and HP seems to have gotten this part right, at least in early testing. I spent an evening taking notes in rehearsal after I shot this ShortCut and it was an effortless note-taking experience.

I'll be reporting much more on the HP tx2051 over the next period of time. But for the moment, take a look at this GBM ShortCut and see how this Tablet PC Inks. (Watch out for the flying stylus.)

and the interesting thing is that its sold as a consumer computer, not a office computer like the dell tablet or similar. therefor the price is much more accessible for a private customer imo.

I saw one of these in the shops and thought the screen was very grainy. What type of screen is it? led?

Warner--what is that handle like thing your are gripping it with on the bottom left side. I need a good handle for inking!!

Jim,

The handle-like thing is the longer-life battery, based on Warner's review from CES.

Looks like a good inking Tablet. Also looks like HP did a good job designing this to work really good. Hopefully you will post more of your thoughts on this Tablet as you use it in the real world.

Just got into Seattle and am fighting Rob for bandwidth. I'll be posting more about the TX in the days and weeks ahead. Cuhulin, that handle is the extended battery and scoobie the screen is not the brightest I have seen. It does have a grainy appearance.

how do you think the experience would compare to the hp2710 to a first time tablet pc user? do you find touch that important in casual use?

I've been looking into getting one of these tablets for a little while now. I originally wanted the TX1000 series but after seeing the complaints on it I decided I would wait. Now I can order this TX2000 series from HP for about $1100 shipping/tax included. My current tablet is too heavy and large for me to carry to class anymore and I was looking for something smaller and more efficient. Thanks Warner for making this video so I can see how it functions. I didn't just notice the inking and touch I also noticed how easily you were moving it around. Looks to be very light. 4lbs? Is that the correct weight?

Only sad thing is I have to wait until I get my excess financial aid in Fall to get it! But the good thing is my old Tablet won't go to waste. My Toshiba R15 will be going to my husband who will also be a college student this fall!

Thanks again Warner for the video!

4 pounds does not seem light :-)
If I recall correctly, my M200 is 4.3 pounds; feels heavy & cumbersome.
