GBM User Review of the Aliph Jawbone

- Warner Crocker

New-aliph-jawbone-headsetIt must be GBM Forum User Review day. Earlier Rob linked to the second in a series on screen protectors by Truc Bui. While I’m still waiting to get my hands on the new Aliph Jawbone BlueTooth headset, GBM Forum user techgeek32 has put up a review in the GBM Forums. He points up the pros and cons of this increasingly popular BlueTooth headset. Here’s an excerpt:

If you use bluetooth while driving this is definitely the best headset I have tested for outgoing call quality and I have tested almost every high-end headset available. I am not as impressed with the incoming quality and I think it is due to a smaller in ear speaker. It has a lot of treble and the default setting that has auto volume adjust is not loud enough in any environment other than a quiet one. I believe this could have been improved on if Jawbone had developed an earpiece more like the old Jabra's with the gel that would funnel the sound into the ear canal. These new earpieces don't do much to help with that

A quick update with my Jawbone 2. I tested it outside some more today. It was very windy, most people could hear me fine and about every 20 seconds could hear a little background noise but we had gusts of about 30 mph so I definately am satisfied with the results. I also want to update a statement that I made in the original review that you lose the noise assasin technology when you manually increase the volume and that is incorrect. You can manually increase the incoming volume without turning the noise assasin feature off. Good News! I am now looking to purchase an extra charging cable so I can have one with me when I am out and about.

I like the look of this one better than the previous model.

Don't forget July 1st the hands-free cell phone law goes into affect for Californians. Get your Jawbones ready.

Another update! I tested the Jawbone out while driving my wife's convertible Audi TT with the top down because it was 69 degrees and a beautiful day. Anyway, my wife was able to hear me but said there was alot of static which I assume was the wind in the background. Most headsets aren't designed to wear while driving a convertible at 50 MPH. I will run some more tests but wanted to let everyone know.

I wanted to point out that I am using a Sprint HTC Touch with the Jawbone 2. It works flawlessly with pairing and reconnecting when I move too far away. The voice dialing feature with Microsoft Voice Command works great as well. Remember that not every Bluetooth headset works the same with every cellular phone or PDA so make sure and thoroughly test it with yours to make sure that all features work.
