GBMInkshow: Taking The Vista Flip

- Rob Bushway

VistaflipAero Glass is certainly one of the sexier features of Windows Vista with all of the eye candy and bells and whistles. One of the big bells that gets rung is the Window Flip. You’ve seen the feature before. You line up all of your open windows in a diagonal line from an icon on the taskbar or pressing the Windows and Tab Keys, and you scroll through them picking the one you want. You can even have video running in one of the windows.

Well there has been lots of speculation on what systems this feature will run on or not and if computers with integrated graphics will be able to handle this and some other media features. I thought I’d give it a try with the Lenovo Thinkpad X60 Tablet PC that I’m trying out. The Lenovo contains an integrated graphics solution and sure enough the Vista Flip works as advertised as you can see in this short Inkshow. Also note, I was able to produce a copy of this Inkshow in Windows Movie Maker. So, at least on this integrated graphics platform it can work.

  • Watch the video (5:10 minutes, 28.46mb, Windows Media streaming or direct download).

Enjoy!

It's so depressing and evident that you must get a schedule in your video inkshows becouse of your sponsor. The "fill" topics are becoming more and more ridiculous in time. That's makes me sorry for Techsmith, they don't understand, freedom is the best thing they can give to you. I still love you gottabemobile guys!.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Sorry you think that some of the fill topics don't live up to standards, and I'm sure not every Inkshow is for everyone. While we do have an obligation to our sponsor, that doesn't influences what we produce or don't produce as an Inkshow. We just try to bring to the tiny screen what is of interest to us, and we hope, by extension, is of interest to our GBM readership/viewership. In this case given that there still is some confusion out there as to what video solution will run which options in Vista, I thought it merited a quick look see as to what this Tablet PC with the integrated graphics solution could do.

If you want the flip without Vista, check out TopDesk. A great piece of $15 software that enables both Expose and Flip on Windows XP.

I've used it for over a year now.

You know that Windows Key-Tab does the same thing... So all you Alt-Tab people could just slide your finger over to the Windows key for a "prettier" effect of the same exact thing....
