Gateway to Discontinue Their Tablet PC Line? Not So Fast

- Rob Bushway

TabletPCReview.com is reporting that Gateway is discontinuing their Tablet PC line, and they expect stock to be depleted of their line of Tablet PCs within the next couple of weeks. We are in the process of confirming this with our own Gateway contacts, but if it is true, it won't be entirely unexpected considering Acer's acquisition of Gateway. Several years ago, Acer discontinued their Tablet PC line, too.

Even though this news wouldn't be a surprise, it will be a big disappointment to see a major OEM leave the Tablet PC space, especially one that was successful in the low end space and was a continual presence in retail.

We'll report more as we learn more. Until then, treat this as an unconfirmed report.

UPDATE: I just spoke with Kelly Odle, who works with Gateway's Media Relations, and the original report from TabletPCReview.com was not entirely accurate. I'll give you the summary and then post Ms. Odle's quote. The C-120X ( 12" ) is being discontinued, while the E-155 (12") series has been sold off to MPCCorp.

However, Gateway is not discontinuing the 14" series ( C-140X) and there are no plans to do so. The 14" Tablet PCs have been selling quite well to consumers, and Gateway plans to continue that line and make them available directly and in the retail channel.

The C-120X, our 12-inch convertible line, is reaching its end of life soon, and we won’t be extending it. Now that the professional side of Gateway has been sold to MPC, we’re making sure that our products are very focused on the consumer. So we are keeping the C-140X line… and it will be sold at both direct and through retail.

They are both on our site right now -- http://www.gateway.com/systems/category/327680012.php?cmpid=CPHM_IMAGE_NOTEBOOKS_CATEGORY327680012

Also, all of the Gateway professional products – including the E-155C 12-inch convertible, are now sold through MPC Corp – here is the link:

This is not surprising. I was chatting with Gateway Sales trying to get a rock-bottom deal on the C-120x and they said they couldn't go any lower now, because the discount was already in place. But, he added too, that their tablet line was going to preconfigured systems with no customization. They have already done this with the C-120 (14 in.) models. I would guess that this is the calm before the storm in depleting their inventory.

Too bad. One of my first tablets was an Acer and I really liked it.

If true, this is particularly bad news since the Gateway models were the only ones most people could actually handle before buying. This would be quite a blow to tablet visibility.

The day it was announced that Acer was buying them I said they would drop tablets. I also said that day that I would never buy another Gateway product again since I despise Acer as an OEM. I've stopped recommending Gateway to people other than the handful of tablets that they had left which are actually very decent for the money. The biggest loss here is to people that are looking to dip their toes into the Tablet PC pool without spending a ton of money.

Acer.... you're on notice.

Actually, sumocat, the hp1000-something or other is also commonly available in best buy. Unfortunately, it is such an awefull inking experience, I think this move pretty much kills the tablet pc for a few more years. (Dell, not withstanding. In spite of its alleged multitouch getting a lot of hype, in practice, the 1.8" disks are just too small capacity and too slow for it to funciton as a general laptop replacement.)

Jeff, I think you mean the TX1000 from HP, which I have handled at Best Buy, but unfortunately they were the non-touchscreen models.

Best Buy doesn't sell the touch screen model. Best Buy, like Acer, has a disdain for tablets. They stopped selling the Gateway convertible in all the Best Buy's near me as well.

I'm glad to see that Gateway (Acer) is going to hang onto the 14" model because I think that's a very good entry level tablet for many people. When my CX2724 was having digitizer trouble, I had a long and torturous experience with Gateway support where the tablet was sent in and returned no less than 4 times, each time coming back with the same problem and something stupid like a replaced motherboard or reinstalled Windows. Finally they agreed to just give me a new one. By then I had already gotten the HP 2710P and I gave the Gateway tablet to my dad who loves it. His friend saw it and asked me where he could buy one. So it's a nice model for people that wanna try out a tablet (and get a really well equipped laptop) without spending more than they normally would.

But I really don't like Acer as a company. They killed off tablets and blamed the concept when the fact was, they stopped competing with the other OEM's that began delivering mature and innovative products. Acer was in position to be one of the most innovative and unique tablet OEM's with the C1xx line of 10" convertibles. The C110 is still my favorite form factor. But then the icing on the cake was when their president or CEO or whatever went around trashing Vista during its launch. That's a great way to sell PC's.

I posted back in October wondering what the acquisition would do to the Gateway line of tablets. Glad they're not going completely.
