Gigabyte M912V update: real for Asia & Europe only.

- Matthew Dillon

I recently spoke with a Gigabyte representative about requesting a demo unit of the upcoming M912V netbook tablet.  Unfortunately for our US readers, you'll have to find alternative ways to get your hands on the M912V as it will not be released to the US market.

The Gigabyte representative writes, "I am sorry, but this product will not be released in the US/Canada Market. It will only be available in Asia and Europe."  Bummer for those looking for a possible netbook with tablet potential.  Why is it that so many cool products are being developed but withheld from the US market?  Does this illustrate that there is less demand for these types of devices?  Vent your frustrations in the comments.

I wasn't really pleased with the Atom Processor it had, but the price of this netbook was good. I don't think we're really missing out on anything because we have better quality tablet PC's like HP's TX series with better specs.

Though a device like this is nice and portable. I was really interested in this device as just strictly note taking at a good affordable price but the cost for importing it won't be worth it and I'll just probably buy a full, powerful tablet.

Given the OS options the Tablet PC bits will not work on this device anyway.

agreed, James, but I don't foresee a reason why someone couldn't installed Home Premium on it and get the tablet functionality, right?

Yep thats globalisation ... the companies act and produce worldwide to minimise costs ... on the other side the markets are isolatet to maximise the wins.

(I have the same problem here in Europe with the Lifebook T2010 from FSC)

Maybe it's due to the weak dollar and the generally low prices for computers in the US? I've just ordered a Dell Latitude XT from the US, because i would pay around 800USD more for a similar machine in Europe.

I am with you here. Being European, I am also frustrated when some product is selling in USA, but not in Europe (for example Flip movie camera). What I hate even more is that the prices in EU are much higher comparing to USA (for example photography gear).

This device looks interesting! I am waiting MSI Wind so far, but I'll look closer at this - the tablet functionality should be very usefull.

I don't know who put them up to this but I'm disappointed :-(. At a price just a tad lower than that it would've easily beat the MSI wind and the ASUS Eee PC.

I was waiting for it so bad. By the way whatever happened to the ECS G10L? .....Or maybe all these delays and products not being released in the U.S. is because of the shortage of Atom chips, uh? maybe. I hope Gigabyte stamps out a U.S. version soon.

By the way Matthew, did the representative really mean the product will never be released here in the U.S.?

C'mon!

it is easy to see why so many devices are never going to be available on the US market. The US patent system is so outrageously put together that no one from outside US would like to dare trying to get a product into the US market. the Patent system should try to learn a little about realism and start to clean out all of their stupid patents and patent laws.

This Pc looks great and just said before it is maybe because of the currency rates at the moment so that it should come only in Europe and Asia. But I think if the sales are good or even very good then they will release maybe a slightly different model also to the US.

Personally I would be great to could have my hands on it and would surely do a big review.

I only would have to keep it away from my girlfriend because she already casts an eye on my x60t since I have it.;-)
