GottaBeMobile Hardware InkShow: OQO model 02 with Docking Station

- Hugo Ortega

Mobiledmeandshot2G'Day from Downunder! My name is Hugo Ortega and yes, I am an Aussie! It is with great pleasure and much enthusiasm that I join the GottaBeMobile Team and provide you with this - my first GBM InkShow.

When faced with the challenge of picking my first topic I couldn't resist the opportunity to showcase my latest UMPC, i.e. the OQO 02. Since unboxing my “shiny” new OQO two-weeks ago I felt the time was right to Vlog my thoughts. This device has captured the imagination of many and had lots of us salivating since its unveiling at CES 2007. As you can imagine I was somewhat excited to receive it and after spending the last 16 days with it as my fulltime machine I felt compelled to break my silence.

In this video I cover the following topics:

  • The Pen Experience (including a look at inking in OneNote 2007 and using the TIP)
  • I do a brief UMPC comparison (side-by-side view of the OQO and 5 other UMPC)
  • We get intimate with the OQO 02 DVD RW Docking Station (including a sneak peak at how I replaced my desktop with this device)
  • And more…

Mobiledemandshot1So if you’re at work make sure your boss isn’t watching (or maybe make sure s/he is). If you’re at home pull up a chair, get comfy and grab some popcorn. The next 40 minutes are designed to inform, enlighten and most of all entertain!

The Model in the video is the one OQO terms the OQO 02 -Best with Windows XP Professional. I performed my own manual upgrade (not a clean install as my device did not like that) to Windows XP Tablet PC Edition and bought the additional pen to utilize the included Active Digitizer screen supplied in the OQO model 02.

Enjoy.

[Ashamedly I forgot to mention battery life in the video: “on the std. 3 cell I am getting a pinch under 2hrs, and on the 900omAh I get a pinch over 4hrs. That’s with “some” Bluetooth and “some” wireless.]

Watch or download the High Res version  (47:59 minutes, 367mb, Windows Media streaming or direct download)

Oh, I forgot to ask, I heard the GottaBeMobile deal was worth 7.8 Mill over 4 Years? Is this correct?

It's also rumored, you turned down an offer from UMPCPortal worth 3.2 Mill over 3 Years.

But the biggest rumor is JKontheRun offer you 9.8 Mill over 4 years? And you turned it down???? Are you crazy???

Sorry, it's the Football off-season.

Michael,

The beer allowance was larger here. Makes all the difference.

That make complete sense. That should put most of the rumors to sleep.

Thanks Warner.

Mike, before this shows up on Valleywag, let me confirm: I gave up half of my $19.6m jkOTR salary to get Hugo on board but we couldn't work out the US to AUS dollars conversion rate. ;)

Hugo, this was a fantastic look at the OQO running XP. Thanks!

Hugo, I have modified my OQO Model 02 to use HSDPA instead of EVDO... Just FYI!

I have a question as it relates to the 'preferred' OS for the OQO O2. I understand that you changed from XP Professional to XP Tablet. Windows Vista (although I'm not sure what version it is) is also offered. Not withstanding the power and battery life problems that Vista brings to the table, what OS do you believe would give the best overall experience to the OQO 02? I do know there are workarounds to the Vista issues.

Great review Hugo. It looks like this is the first UMPC that I could maybe see myself using.

@Robert Burdock:

Hi Rob, Thanks for the kind remark. If I weren't me and I were watching my video I would want to buy me one too. LOL.

@tnkgrl:

Ji tnkgrl, I saw that and thought it was great of you. I think I caught Warner's post on it a week ago. Great work as usual by you!

@Paul Mesko:

Hi Paul,

Great question mate. Truth be told I miss the WOW since leaving Vista. The best OS for these devices is unquestionably Vista. Not becasue of Glass and not becasue of Sidebar but because of the new TIP. Becasue the TIP has a learning behaviour (allowing you to teach it how you write) and it also allows you to scribble out mistakes, this to me makes Vista a positive step forward. The new Origami Experience Pack is also worth a mention too, and as is the inclusion of the HID drivers for touchscreens. All in all I am a fan of Vista and miss it a little now that I am on XP again.

[Funny how you don't nkow the value of something till you lose it. LOL]

@EBPMan

HI EBPMAn. In my video I alluded to additional features you can access by combining the Function (Fn) key and other keys. One of these combinations is "rotate". Regrettably when I press it all I get is a skewed mouse that thinks it is sitting on a rotated screen and it won't correct itself till I restart. Now I am not sure if this is becasue of my upgrade of something gone wrong with my device but it does not work on mine - but seems to be supported. Anyone else know???

@Doug Peters:

Hi Doug. If you're a bleeding edge kinda guy then this device is really cool. If you an efficiency guy then it is really cool. And if you're a cool guy...then this is really cool.

You get my point! LOL. CHeers for the comment mate.

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING EVERYONE.

Nice first GBM Inkshow ! However there is a little thing annoying in this video: it is a little Beep-Beep that we can hear regularly along the review; Otherwise, It was very entertaining!

Congratulations on what is perhaps the best review of OQO till date anywhere on the planet.

1. Please do a video review of the Vista Tablet functions if you can. Can one use it LARGELY as a ink device? i.e. use it to write and store pages in Ink without converting them?how good or bad is Via's performance.Can you try voice commands on Vista? Do you think that can substitute for keyboard usage?

2. Can you try Skype 3.2 using EVDO or HSDPA (if not then Wifi) and let us know how it works with a via processor and oqo? Hows the sound quality?

3. Can u pls do a video of Dragon with the fan speeds at different levels to check interference?

4. Can you comment on the usability of the keyboard viz a viz a Traditional Blackberry keyboard , and say a Fujitsu 1510 keyboard?

5. Is it possible to do a head to head with the Flipstart?would again be a first for anyone out there to do so! Intel vs. Via

6. On oqo which is better XP or Vista? Can Vista bear the load of Vista? Ultimate or Business?

7. Very important for me is to email Quick Notes- you mentioned the side notes of one Note and there is some other Yellow Sticky notes i dont remember the name- can one jot a two sentence notes and immediately hit email, without having to go into outlook and do insert etc? Also can one DIRECTLY write with ink in the body of Outlook 2007?

8. Lastly, two points u mentioned-in tablet mode can you not reorient the screen to 180 degrees ..that way the touch scroll will come on top, wont it? u mentioned DVD RW is the best- is it super multi? can it read and write any format? Does one really need dock? I largely use a regular 15 or 17 inch thinkpad/HP as my primary machine and the new one will be the secondary one...can one project from the oqo onto a LAPTOP screen? Cant JUST a cable do the trick, why invest in a whole 300$ dock if you already have a bunch of DVD RW super multis at home?:)

WOW Athreya,

That’s a big comment, and a big compliment. If you don't mind, please let the Team and I look at each question over the next 48hrs and post a response for you.

Thanks for your support and enthusiasm.

Hugo,

Great Video. Actually starting to get me thinking I can travel in a 5 inch world, hmmmm. You mention in a comment that Vista is the way to go, so why did you choose xp?

Wednesday, May 16, 2007 8:30:09 PM (Mountain Daylight Time, UTC-06:00)
Hi Scott,

Thank you for the comment. Truth be told the only reason I went XP was becasue of availability. I would prefer Vista but am not confident to run an upgrade till I hear a few more reports. I would prefer to have the OQO 02 device with Vista preinstalled - as my chances of having a good experience are a little highter - and am thinking about getting one. I belive that the TIP experience, coupled with the Active Digitizer shipped with the OQO, would make for a great Vista machine.

If you have time, can you try a digital painting software called Artrage on the OQO? There is a free version on their website:

http://www.artrage.com/artragedown.html

And I think it's also the same painting program that's in the microsoft experience pack.

If you do try it, I'd like to see the effect of the OQO magnifying buttons on the image.

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Michael,

That's a great suggestion. I will get onto it in the next few days and post some images. At present I have set myself the task of doing a Vista upgrade on the OQO (as I miss the WOW too much) and will get art rage on ther after that.

Get back to you soon. (Thanks for participating)

OUTSTANDING, OUTSTANDING, OUTSTANDING..

This is by far one of the best reviews of any device that I have ever seen. Hugo, you have a natural talent to convey interest passion and proffesionalism.

I was watching your review of the 02 with great interest, especially your concept of a 5" World and the apps that you use. It was ironic as I was watching your Inkshow on my oqo +1 whilst rocking our 11 week old son to sleep (which took some time), I was drawn to the comparison of your 02 and my 01, you highlighted many significant improvements on the 02.

Altough We live in the Scottish Highlands, which most data streams are redundent or non applicicable. My HSDPA Devices wont pick up any 3G or higher signal here and like you we dont have EVDO in The UK, which kinda makes the data version null and void.

Altough I was very impressed with the outside viewable screen, which for me is very important, although I have yet to come across a more vivid and sharp resolution than that of my vaio ux280 & UX50, these are much easier to use because of there high res screens, (in particuler one note). Although they are touch sceen, they are much easier to use than the terrible digitiser on my oqo 01, it would be intersting to try this on the 02 just to see the level of improvemens.

Hugo, thankyou for this review this and this alone as conviced me to buy the 02, further more you have served to justify (To my Wife) my unatural obsession with umpc's. In which I have in my collection, 3 oqo's (01, +1 & tablet), UX 280p, Q1, Vaio U101, Vaio U71, UX50,Vaio U3.

Despite my obession, with these devices I tend to use only one at any giving time, I have started using my HTC Ameo as my primary UMPCish device even though it runs windows mobile 5.

I relise that this is a long comment, however You gave so much to comment about and judging by the other comments by others in the community I think you have set a very high bench mark for video podcasts and in my view I am really happy that you have joined GBM which produce the very best inkshows(video casts) and podcasts on the entire web.

best regards

WOW Dean!

Firstly allow me to thank you for your patronage and express my sympathies to your wife (and mine) for being married to such obsessive compulsive men. I too have a little child (Amber, 6 months old) and a 5yr old boy (Leon, 5 yrs young). The Model 02 has really made my life a lot easier and it has been a big hit with my son. Truth be told when I rock my Amber to sleep often I have the Model 02 (with screen brightnees turned down) in one arm and bab in the other. Since I know I might be away from the internet for an hour or so I now take it with me (...God I hope your wife or my don't read that statement).

Any way, thank you for being part of the Hugo Ortgea show and for being such a good sport. It sounds like whether it was my video, or someone elses, I think you were well on your way to device number 4! LOL. (PS. I own over 13 Tablets)

Great comment mate!
Sunday, May 20, 2007 7:39:00 AM (Mountain Daylight Time, UTC-06:00)
Hugo,you should cut a deal with repective UMPC manufacturers to pass on a deep discount to you, which you can split with all those who buy the product based on your review. i dithered for two months and read almost every page on the Internet about the oqo and then came your review. the next day i placed my order.

Your passion, style and the content of your review is easily the best out there. You should be signing up with a TV channel to do a weekly gadget show. I am damn serious.

We wait with bated breath for the next video review installment. Please do one a week!

Btw any comments on comparisons with the fujitsu and HTC shift would be welcomed-people are already talking of them as OQO killers!

Hi Athreya,

THank you for the compliment. If Televeision wants to find me I'm sure they will. LOL.

The HTC Shift and the Fujitsu both look good but I try not to review them beofre I physially get my hands on them. I posted my inital thoughts about the HTC Shift here: Will Hugo Ortega make the Shift?.

THanks again...more on the way.
