GottabeMobile Exclusive Video Review of the Lenovo X60 Thinkpad Tablet PC

- Warner Crocker

X60smallIf it feels like a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet PC week here at GottaBeMobile, well that might be accurate. To be honest, it is tough not to like this new Tablet PC, and I have to say, I’m very grateful for the opportunity I have had this last week to give it a once over and share some of my thoughts with you.

So, let’s take a look at the Thinkpad X60 Tablet PC. In this GBM Hardware InkShow I take a walk around tour of the unit I received which comes with the SXGA + (high res) screen option and is an engineering sample provided by Lenovo. I also discuss the battery options, examine the Nav Dial, take a look at the many utilities that come pre-loaded on the Thinkpad, and even show you a neat trick or two exclusive to the Thinkpad X60 Tablet PC. In my opinion, Lenovo has a winning entry in the Thinkpad X60 and it X60tablet10logowill certainly have as large an impact on the Tablet PC market as their original X41 entry, which was enormous.

A couple of notes: I was so excited putting the InkShow together that I goofed on the screen resolution options that are available when making the recording. Here they are:

XGA = 1024x768
XGA / Multitouch / Outdoor = 1024x768 (upgrade price of $200)
SXGA+ = 1400x1050 (upgrade price of $50)

On pricing, note that Lenovo will have three different options available with launch today, November 14, ranging from $1799 to $2399. On November 28 you will be able to configure your order to your liking from an array of options with a base price of $1699 (one year warranty as opposed to three.)

X60table14logoIf you’re looking for more specs check out this GBM post that also contains the great interview that Dennis Rice conducts with Mike Hagerty, the Worldwide Segment Manager for the Thinkpad series, before you dive into this Hardware InkShow review.

Remember also, that GottaBeMobile.com will be publishing another exclusive Hardware InkShow very soon in which Dennis Rice will be reviewing the Multi-Touch/Indoor/Outdoor screen, the Ultra-Bay Media Slice, and much more. You don’t want to miss that one.

Enjoy!

You can thank me for the timing of this product release. I just purchase a new T60.

Great review Warner!

I have a question though, have you ever used or seen a X41 tablet? Is the X60, just as thin as the X41? It looked a little thicker in the video.

Thanks.

Michael,

I have only had my hands on an X41 briefly in the past, so I can't really make a direct comparison. According to a spec comparison it is 1.1 to 1.3 (varies across the unit) compared to 1.06.

Great review Michael, very much appreciated. I got the X41T when it first came out love it. You reminded me of a few buttons / features of the X41 that I forgot about! The integrated WWAN, new nav pad, auto rotate, and resume after removing pen are pretty cool new features for the X60. The biggest improvement has to be the 7200 RPM hardrive, and well of course the processor / increased ram. The only gripe I can come up with so far is they didn't change the speaker placement. I had to prop up the front of my X41 with a remote control so I could hear your review properly while in notebook mode. I wish they would have one or better yet two speakers on the lower bezel of the monitor, or somewhere besides the bottom of the unit. I'm not sure 10-15% increase in volume is going to cut it for all applications / environments. Thanks again for the in-depth review, looking forward to the other X60 ink shows!

Kevin.
the internal speaker is definitely still an issue, but there is a small bit of hope called the Utrabase dock. More on that later...., in the next video! :)

I really want to sell my LE1600 and get one of these! I must say I'm very surprised at the base price. Lenovo is staying quite competitive.

Hi Warner,

Great review of the X60! I notice you have an M200 behind you in the video. I too have one, and really like it - with one exception. When viewing the screen in portrait mode there is some sort of a visual effect ("shimmering") that really hurts my eyes and I just can't use it in that mode. We actually have two of these units and both exhibit the same issue. As soon as you turn the unit and hold it in landscape mode the effect is gone. Do you notice this on your's? Is this a normal LCD panel effect? Do you notice this on the X60?

I too think the X60 might be my next tablet.

Warner: I just had a chance to watch your review of the X60. Awesome job on putting that together and for taking the time to go through every little detail and a few of your concerns. Can't wait to finally get my hands on one for teaching.

I wish they would make one model with both high res. and multi touch but I understand that is not possible at present. How do I make up my mind which feature is more important to me?
I like working with a lot of windows opened at the same time and every now and then I do some photoshop work which would benefit from the higher resolution. At the same time, using your fingers when in class or on the move seems like it would be very smart. What do you think?

..darn you Lenovo, no respect for us undecisive people ;)

Brad,

I do not notice the shimmering effect you are talking about on the X60 and I think (but do not know for sure) that this is caused on the M200 by the protective film Toshiba includes on their screens.

Johan,

I'm in the same boat with indecision as well. If I had to decide today it would be the hi-res option simply because my work requires it more. But I'm still chewing it over. Check out Dennis's video Inkshow on the touchscreen as you are trying to decide.

Warner,

Great review! Is it possible for you to do a screen capture of SXGA+ and XGA screen for comparing the size of text/icons.

This would be much appreciated and very helpful in making a decision as to which screen to choose.

Cheers,
Yash.
