HP Compaq 2133 UMPC News and Speculation Continues

- Warner Crocker

HP 2133 UMPCThings just keep hopping about HP’s Compaq 2133 UMPC that may or may no be due this spring. We’ve reached out to HP but so far the slience is deafening. Of course that just breeds more speculation, so maybe one day these companies will learn that lesson. See The HTC Shift story.

But anyway, this morning brings us word that HP may be forasaking Intel and arming the 2133 with a VIA processor which has some excited and some a bit filled with trepidation. I’m in that last corner.

We’ve also seen word that we are possibly looking at a price range of around $600 US. That seems to go against some early statements that “you won’t even need to consider this purchase. You’ll buy it like a handphone without a thought.”  To my mind $600 may be a impluse buy price point for some, but even Apple seems to having second thoughts about that these days. $400 or lower seems to be the sweet spot.

Meanwhile the speculation will continue until we have some hard data. Which hopefully we will soon.

Personally, I'm glad that they're using VIA; I've spent a fair amount of time reading whitesheets and such for their new Isaiah microarchitecture, and I have to say that I'm impressed. 2 to 4 times faster then the C7, and the fastest floating point processing unit of any x86 CPU. That's one of the main reasons I'm keeping my eye on this; the processor rules.
