HP's TouchSmart 2 Is Shipping

- Matt Faulkner

imageA little bigger than you normal Tablet PC, but not as touchy cool as the Surface computer - The HP's TouchSmart 2 all-in-one PC is now ready to start shipping out to everyone.  I've had the chance play with one of these in my local Best Buy and think they are very interesting, but don't have the extra $1,200ish laying around to have a kitchen computer.  I do feel that incorporating one of these into my daily routine/lifestyle would be an experiment worth trying - I do see value in having a 'central computer' for the family to use.  I wonder how many people that own one of these actually uses the touch screen.

I know what you mean about wondering about how often people would use the touch screen after the novelty wears off. I read that it's not really a touch screen but is activated by breaking a ray of light.
From Gizmodo: "The screen of the Touchsmart isn't touch sensitive; it's actually a beam of light in front of the screen that recognizes where your finger is when you break the plane of the light beam."

I don't know if we'll ever really see touch taking off as a desktop solution. Mobile, yes, but do you really want a big smudgy monitor at home!

Any chance we see this touch interface ported over to the tablet line.
It sure looks MUCH better than this stupid quickplay stuff they preload on the HP tablets.

jberger - I asked that very question during the Berlin event. While the execs never directly answered the qustions ("We do not discuss products that are unannounced," etc) there was definitely the general mood that it makes sense to port the experience to smaller screens. Since they've already written the software, it makes sense to exploit it in as many ways as they can.
