Hardware InkShow: Fujitsu U1010

- Hugo Ortega

Fujitsu U810 / U1010 UMPC I've pushed the envelope and burnt the candle at both ends this week to bring you, yesterday's "The Shift" video, and today's video review of what we lovingly term The Stormtrooper: the Fujitsu U1010 / U810 Ultra-Mobile PC! Both were promised and as such both were delivered. These videos have been much anticipated so with the burden of your buying decision in mind I have made the humanly impossible, possible. If you pay close attention you will notice that I am in the same attire for this video, as I am for The Shift Video, as I am for the Nova SunPad video - which is no coincidence as I filmed and edited them all on the same day! (Plus currently uploaded my TechED Speech which I will post shortly!)

Anyway, back to business! The Fujitsu U1010 / U810 UMPC is a special machine. I blogged about it being a real kiddie pleaser and with mixed emotions I can report that I still feel the same. It is so small, so cute, and so overwhelmingly concise that it makes other UMPC almost seem featureless. The screen converts, the keyboard types (albeit better with thumbs) and the screen really does favor the pen input!

Buyer beware when it comes to this device as it is a Gedgeteer's gadget and has the ability to make a sane person crumble. Unlike the OQO with all its pretentiousness (read: $$$$) the Fujitsu U1010 / U810 is more of a must-have than a wanna-have. Without ever wanting to buy one myself I must admit that by the time I had to return the unit I was Fujitsu U810 UMPC trying to look for any number of reasons to find the funds (hope my wife is not reading this!)

As usual sit back and enjoy the ride as I take you through one very desirable, yet un-pocketable, device.

Machine specs (as tested):

  • Windows Vista Business Edition
  • Intel® A110 Processor NEW 800MHz
  • DDR2 1024MB DDR2 533MHz
  • 1.8" 40GB
  • 5.6-inch SuperFine WSVGA, 1024 x 600 pixels
  • Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG and Bluetooth® v2.0

U810 UMPCIn summary I think this device has the ability to command respect; it has come in at the right price, with the right specs. Had I of had the device without ever seeing The Shift (I'm taken aren't I) the chances of me buying one would be higher! It is however a great kiddie Tablet, or Vertical Market Tool. Either way I believe the future is bright with these sort of devices.

Real interesting that the OQO is still faster than the A110 on these newer devices from Intel. Although you didn't show bootup, the HTC Shift video seemed to take ages to come out of sleep
I have an OQO and it has smooth Vista boot up and close down.

Also interested in you saying that the fan noise is better than the OQO - I find the fan really loud on the OQO.
Heat I find a problem too on the OQO (though I note you say you dont find it a problem).

When it gets to the UK (which could be months at this rate) I'll try the Fujitsu U1010 out in a store I think. I think the Fuji seems to have some better features over the OQO, but having watched your video I can now understand why you say its not a clear winner due to (a) pocketability and (b)speed.

May an SSD version would be faster or maybe we really need to wait for Intels newer chipset next year.

Nice video Hugo.

That FM selector is for the FM transmitter (not receiver.) it allows you to transmit audio from the U1010 into your car stereo via the FM radio. A nice feature.

Steve.

What are the resolutions working with windows mobile? It seems on the video that only 640x480 works and none of the higher ones are available.
By the way, nice video.

I am asking myself the same question. I want to compare the 2 processors PENTIUM M and A1xx where most UMPC devices are now using. I want to know which one is more powerful and why they prefer this to Pentium M. I have a SONY U750P and I can't upgrade for I am not happy with the SPEED of the new UMPC devices available now. Can you make a detailed comparison between the 2 prcessors??? Also I want to know the difference in terms of speed between UX280P and U1010, which one is more powerful??? thanks chris

Hugo,

Greeting from Tokyo..

Is your unit a standard production unit not a pre-release if so can you check
if the unit has the second mini pci-E socket ?

The U8240 (the japanese version) hasn't as well as no bluetooth.

Thanks

Hi Hugo,

Can you post the link to that accessory (dock) that you used for U1010?

Thanks.

This may be blasphemous, but I like this Fujitsu over the HTC Shift. Aside from the alternative OS, they seem pretty similar. Plus, I like Windows XP Tablet much more on these devices than Vista.

The Shift accepts a SIM card, but I am a little unclear on whether it just is for connectivity or actual phone use. I also d/n know if my AT&T SIM will be accepted? Are these two devices competition for each other, (i.e. keyboards, screen size) or have I missed the point?

Hi Hugo

I must admit that I am a little puzzled. You'd already reviewed the HTC Shift and yet there's no mention or comparison between the two. Why not? How do they compare?

You state above that you were "trying to look for any number of reasons to find the funds" and yet for the shift and yet in the HTC Shift review you state "I put my order down right away!"

So please, which is it? The Shift or the U1010?

I have an old P3 800mhz laptop. Both of these devices are 800mhz, but from what I've seen on your video reviews, there's just no comparison in terms of speed. How does a modern 800mhz chip (like in the these devices) compare to something like my old P3 800mhz? What would that equate to? ie Would a modern 800mhz be the equivalent of say an old P3 at say 1500mhz (if such a chip existed of course)? I hope you see what I'm getting at.

One last thing. THe Shift's screen can't be hidden away, unlike the U1010(which is why I like that, as I would tend to carry one in a bag all the time), so how susceptible are these screens to damage?

Thanks.

Great reviews, interesting background noises. aybe you might consider closing your curtains some time to reduce screen glare. But then again, it does help to get a "real world" representation of how the screens look in bright light.

Dang! You've got to leave a note here on the comment screen about how your email addy gets shown. I didn't really want that, even if it does have a "No Spam" added.

Thanks for the the great review, Hugo...quick question: is the U1010 the same as the U810, or is it a later model?

Hugo, excellent review.

Can you please elaborate on the GPS cradle & software? Does it contain maps for the world with streets? Who manufactures the GPS cradle? Lastly, where did you get the GPS cradle from?

Thank you

Michael Parekh: The U810 is the North American release of the U1010 (Asia/Pacific). The U810/U1010 is also known as 8240 in Japan, minus Bluetooth and some other things.

The U810 comes with a 4 cell battery (~5 hrs), all black casing, and probably some pack in accessories difference as well; most notably the case.

Hugo is on vacation and not able to reply to your question. When he returns, we'll ask him to elaborate on the GPS software / cradle

Hugo,

I was wondering how big your hands are? I have small hands. You say that small hands would make typing on this thing with our thumbs harder; but maybe my hands are small enough to touchtype. So I was wondering if I would be capable of touchtyping this thing.

How large are each keys (Inches would be helpful)?

What is the hinge mande out of?

How does this thing run with XP rather than Vista?

How well does it run art programs?

Can it detect different pressure sensitivities of the stylus?

Thanks.
June
