I have Succumbed to the Mania

- Sierra Modro

Apple iPhone I thought I could hold out, but no, not after the announcements a few days ago. My last remaining obstacles were removed on Thursday with the announcement of the iPhone SDK and the VC funding.

Today I bought a 16GB iPhone. I love it, at least so far. We'll see how the next week shapes up, but I'm cautiously optimistic. I'd been looking to buy a new phone for personal use. I haven't exactly had a personal cell phone for the last couple of years. I had a number, but it was forwarded to my work cell. Since I spend about 120 minutes on the phone each month, nearly all of which is mobile to mobile, I just carried one phone and forwarded the calls.

Lately, however, I'd been getting a desire to have a personal phone separate from the workhorse AT&T 8525. The iPhone intrigued me - I love the browsing interface - but with no support for Exchange and limited 3rd party apps, I was very hesitant. Steve Jobs changed that on Thursday, so I could justify getting one now. (Or is that rationalize...)  I'm not a Mac person. This was the first time I ever went in a Mac store. As a long time Windows advocate and programmer, Macs were the "Dark Side". Even after Apple embraced the Intel processors, I still hesitated.

But I reluctantly think that Warner may be right. Apple has a fantastic product in the iPhone and it is poised to dominate the market. Intel's best hope for MIDs is to get the Atom into the second gen iPhone.

I've got to say that the iPhone is becoming more and more attractive, especially since my cheap old Motorola phone finally gave out on me. But I'm stuck on Verizon for a long time yet, and CDMA phones are very limited. Plus, I'm hoping the XPERIA X1 can hold its own when it comes out, it certainly looks attractive enough.

I purchased an 8G iphone a month or two ago and was so frustrated by its limitations, especially the lack of flexibility with Apple apps or 3rd party apps, I sold it. But with this latest development I succumbed again and will give it a longer trial -- at least until the new v2.0 arrives. I'm keeping my HTC Advantage although I'll switch my SIM card to the iphone and then alternate a bit. I'm still not sold on Apple -- have never liked their closed system or the limitations they impose -- but there can be not question they've got the best GUI right now. And with what appears to be the merging of the UMPC market into the "small laptop" sector with the really small UMPC becoming MID devices, there aren't many alternatives.

I have to admit, I haven't seen anything in the iPhone that would make me want to switch from my HTC-Touch. The iPhone is pretty, but the functionality is lacking for me. I can run as many 3rd party apps as I wish on my Touch, not be restricted to Apple's single app at a time. I can download any apps I wish, rather than be restricted to Apple's choices in their store. Is offering 3rd party apps and Exchange syncing better than not? Sure, but the picture that some are painting of the masses setting their WM devices on fire and running to the nearest Apple store is a bit premature. :-)

Internet? My tablet tethered to my phone gives me better surfing. Also, I'd rather not have my phone's battery life tied to whether or not I want to listen to music or watch videos on my iPod. Etc. etc. etc. Basically, it does give the iPhone additional advantages, but this "Game over" attitude that's sweeping some sites (not this one, I might add) is a bit much. Usages are varied, and to say that two additions mean everyone is now an iPhone user... well, that's just silly. :-)

I'll stick with my present phone, thanks. It has, among other things:

Ability to send and receive MMS
Stereo Bluetooth support
A very good 5MP camera
Ability to record VGA video
Ability to swap the battery
Thousands of 3rd party programs
A short, cheap phone contract

And it doesn't need that awful itunes.

And as for people saying it's game over for everyone else. The iphone is only available in a few countries.

My last 4 phones have all been HTC models. I'm not all that keen on my current one (cant even remember the model) but the one before was the HTC Universal. It was utterly brilliant. Fantastic screen and great to type on. I use my phones alot with pocket word, pocket excel and microsoft reader. I dont believe any of these things are well catered for on the iphone . So until a version of pocket office is out for the iphone, and i can read my ebooks on it .. i'll have to avoid it... sadly.

I too for the first time ever bought apple on Wednesday. I too have avidly avoided apple. I like it so far though have been frustrated with the web part. I needed a mp 3 player that would work with audible and one thing led to another and voila---the iphone. Keep us posted on all your discoveries---I want to know. I think it is ok to discuss apple on the site, right?

Last time I used an Apple divice was an Apple-IIe in '82.

Two weeks ago I bought a 32GB iPod Touch, AWESOME screen interface.
I love the internet access via WiFi. I use it all the time, I can read GBM anywhere. Instant on-off. And the Google maps, with satellite pictures, fantastic.
Now I can't wait until the 5x7 version comes out with the additional active digitizer pen.

I could not buy the iPhone since last June I bough a new T-Mobile phone and now I am stuck with the 2 yr contract.
Enjoy your iPhone and keep reporting. It is Mobile Device. The fact it is not a MS device should be inmaterial in this site. At least that's the way I see it.

Don't worry - as I find news-worthy items on the iPhone, I'll still post. We're not wedded to Microsoft or anything. Apple is fair game, particularly with such an intuitive touch interface.

Today my husband called me obsessed. It usually takes at least 3-4 days for him to notice my obsession. This was only about 12 hours.
