I've Done It - I've Ordered a Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC

- Rob Bushway

It has been about four months since Dell released their XT Tablet PC, and we still have not been able to bring you a video review of this highly anticipated, but very expensive, capacitive touch Tablet PC. We keep asking and they keep telling us that they are trying to get more eval units in the pool. It's a sad day when a site dedicated to Tablet PC news and video reviews can't get a review unit on one of the most talked about Tablet PC releases in years. I have some more thoughts on this subject that I'll share in a later post ( Dell needs to talk to Lenovo and Toshiba and Motion Computing for advice on how to run an eval program ), but on to the bigger story.

Yesterday, I bit the bullet and finally bought one....but man, did it really hurt.

I decided that if I was going to buy one in order to bring the GBM and Tablet PC community a ton of video and text reviews, I was going to do it up right: DLV screen, 64 gb SSD, media base, 2 45-watt adapters, 6 and 9 cell batteries, and the obligatory FieldMate convertible Tablet PC case.  My bank account is empty.

Dell is showing an estimated ship date of April 8, but knowing Dell and how they normally process orders, I'd expect it much quicker than that. So, stay tuned for a barrage of extensive Latitude XT Tablet PC review coverage from the site who knows Tablet PCs the best - GottaBeMobile.com. Whatever you want to know about the XT, we are going to try and bring it to you.

On another note, I'm finalizing my interview with N-Trig and plan to publish it tomorrow.

The bottom line I would like to know is whether it is really worth the cost.

(I hope to get my M700 this week. I couldn't wait for your review. You can tell Dell they are missing out.)

Rob, are you setting up a Paypal account for donations so you can still feed the family for the next month?

Look forward to your reviews of this pricey beast!

Ditto to Steven's Q.

I could have gotten by with just the $2499 model, and saved myself some money. But I've seen the benefits of SSD, and that is what threw the price up by $700. I paid right at $4k, which included the DLV option.

Woo-hoo! As one who is considering buying an XT in the next 3-4 months, I really look forward to your review!

maybe we can hold a donation for this brave decision! ;-)

I'm also planning to buy one within the next weeks, but I'll hold me finger of the Dell "order button" until I can see some more info, review or inkshow from Rob!

We do have a donate page, but don't advertise it often. Donations are certainly welcome!

The XT is a great tablet. The ONLY reason I don't have one today is the Price/Value ratio is extremely high. I'm still bugeyed at that $4k figure.

Rob; Way to take a hit for the team ;) $4 grand? Ouch!

Actually, I wasn't one of the people considering this tablet since there are other *cough-cough* cheaper *cough-cough* options out there.

The Dell name doesn't make me want to pay any more for something than I have to.

Totally agree. Were it not for needing to get the review and some data collected on it, I wouldn't ever spend that much on a tablet pc for my own personal use or recommend it for a client.

I'm sure I'm gonna love it and enjoy the new touch experience, but $4k is $4k....

I think Dell still has a challenge in actually claiming and promoting the Tablet just like they had a problem with the Axim pocket PC - a great product but they ended production last year. For Dell not to provide GBM with a test model says to me the Tablet is just not worth much to them to even market it in the very arena that would be specifically interested in what they offer! (What are they thinking???)

I wonder if Dell have resigned themselves to this being a 'niche' market, focussing on the Business user with cash to spend. However, they, and indeed Toshiba and HP, may be missing a trick. As has been discussed before, Apple may well step in and snatch the consumer market for 'touch' devices.

More aggresive marketing and support for touch features is needed, increasing demand and lowering prices.

I think that Dell is just trying to milk the vertical markets with their superior technology (NTRIG).

If they are successfull then they will probably eventually roll out and Inspiron model priced for consumers. Does anyone have any numbers on their sales figures for these things?

Why are you spending all of this money when your kid has been deadly ill and you have a large family to support? Gadgets are nice but you come across caring more about your "gadgets" than your family. I hope you can really afford this stuff, there is no way you spend as much time with your kids. It's impossible.

Thanks for the concern, Kaos911.

I own a business ( GottaBeMobile.com ) which is largely focused on producing video and tech reviews. It is a part of what I do to make a living. A large part of that has to do with buying and selling equipment in order to produce reviews. Believe me, I have put off purchasing the XT due to the high cost for as long as possible.

Again - thanks for your concern.

I was just lurking here but kaos911's posts compelled me to say something. I don't think we should be judging Rob's purchase from that perspective because (1) we don't have the information to judge and (2) it is not our role in life to judge and (3) it is none of our business. I might think Rob is foolish to enrich Dell or to spend $4k on the XT when the XT4 is right around the corner. But I'd never presume, and don't think it's right for anyone to presume Rob is putting gadgets ahead of his child. End of speech.

Rob,

I'm not a religious man, but I commend you on your response to such a cruel and hurtful comment. Of course, I do believe in something like karma. Be well, and thanks for spearheading such a professional and enjoyable site for all of use in the tabletscape and beyond.

My daddy always said, " Kill'em with kindness. " Anyone that has read this blog knows that Rob is a heck of a nice guy and would not let anything get between him and his kids.

As a Latitude XT owner, I support this move and I await glowing reviews.

Oh, hope it wasn't my tongue in cheek comment that prompted 'kaos' to comment. A bit harsh if I say so myself.

By Rob buying the XT it will generate more traffic to the site and as he says, it's what he does for a living! I'm sure Rob has his priorities correct and you only have to read his personal blog, with the love and concern they have for Maggie, to see that.

No matter what happens in life you don't just give up, you continue to make a living to support your family, you indulge in your hobbies/passions, you make time for family and friends and you get on with it.

Hey, kaos911, lay off.

I don't believe he is the type of person who would spend that kind of money (or any money) on something that took away from his family.

Rob's love, sincerity and concern for his family should never have been an issue. It is very obvious he is an upstanding person, husband and father.

Hi Rob,
You made a great choice. I have been using the Dell XT for a few months now and love it! You can read my thoughts over on my blog - http://nicholasrayner.com/blog/search/?q=Dell+Latitude+XT
