I've Just Canceled My M700 Tablet PC Order

- Rob Bushway

Well, thanks to some sleuthing by GBM reader Yolonda Villa, I've just confirmed with Toshiba that customized M700 Tablet PC orders WILL NOT have touch at this time. Touch will be available as an option in January, though. Any customized orders placed right now will only get the active digtizer and not the multi-mode. I have canceled my order.

Thanks for hunting this down, Yolonda. If you've ordered a customized M700 thinking you were also getting touch, I'd suggest calling Toshiba and canceling your order, and waiting until January.

Toshiba needs to make this very clear on the customized ordering page.

Well, that really sucks. Still a good price for the configuration though. Just not a great price.

Wow! Thanks for the info Rob. I was just getting ready to call up Toshiba to order mine. Bummer.

Holy crap, are you kidding me?

Thanks for the update. I will be doing the same.

I cancelled my order too. I had called Toshiba before ordering an M700 to make sure that the touch digitizer would also be supported, since the website was unclear. At the time I was told that it was definitely included in customized orders and I posted here and elsewhere that this was the case. We now learn that this is not correct. I feel bad for passing along this incorrect information. If you were looking forward to a dual mode digitizer and already placed an order for an M700, I'd suggest you contact Toshiba sales as quickly as possible. I'm bummed.

Should you guys wait until after the CES event? Some amazing products sometimes come right after the event. Buying M700 right now will cut you away many exciting options.

Too bad dude. I remember the confusion of the X60T. Hope that it's not happening again

I'm also really distressed that my fears based on the customizing page wording proved to be valid. I so wanted to order the M700 right now, especially since I'll be leaving for South America for 10 weeks on January 28, and really wanted to have it in my hands before then. With not being able to order until some as yet unspecified date in January, my chances of that are definitely not looking too good.

But, I'm glad my paranoia may have saved some from a nasty surprise on receiving their M700s!

This all sounds too much like the problem with the R400 and the wireless dock -- it's as if someone at Toshiba wants to have a few people bite now and get burned rather than wait for the actual features that are advertised.

Thanks for mentioning this, Rob, as I would have ordered this week if I had not seen this.

What's with people shipping unfinished tablets these days? First the R400 without UWB, then the XT without multitouch, now the M700 without touch?

And in each case they advertise the missing features in big bold letters and then in the small print state they'll be available "some time" in the future. I swear, there are some real marketing geniuses out there.

Actually, the advertising is correct. It's specifically the customized models that lack touch. The pre-configured units, which were in the press release, do list touch as an included feature.

Interestingly the Toshiba sales rep I bought the M700 from is insisting that 100% of the M700s support touch. So the order hasn't been canceled as I asked after all. Sounds like this is going to be fun. I'm trying to get help from elsewhere in the company. I'll let you know how it goes.

Whew, order finally got canceled. The sales rep acknowledged that touch for CUSTOMIZED orders wasn't going to be available until 2nd week of January. I'm looking forward to seeing what the availability will actually be like.

I also see now from the ToshibaDirect website that "preconfigured" M700s that DO include the touch display won't be shipping for 4-5 weeks from now. That puts their shipping date close to the January date I was given as to when customized M700s will be shipping with touch. Sounds like the picture is getting clearer: Touch-enabled M700s are expected to be shipping in January. At least that's my read on this.
