Lenovo X300 Compared to Lenovo X61 Tablet PC

- Rob Bushway

Lenovo X300 I arrived home today from our St. Louis trip to find a nice surprise - an evaluation Lenovo X300 Ultra-Portable Notebook.

Being the true geek that I am, I stopped dead in my tracks to take pictures, comparing it to the Lenovo X61 Tablet PC. You can expect a lot more over the coming weeks on the X300. We've got it for several months.

My first impressions:

  • Very light and thin. Feels almost 25% lighter than the X61. It is much thinner, especially along the front.
  • It doesn't have the same "sexiness" as the MacBook Air, but the extra USB ports, integrated WWAN, integrated CD drive, and user replaceable battery make up for it. I played with a MacBook Air this week at an Apple store and would have bought one had I had the money. Honestly, I'd likely go for the X300 instead due to extra flexibility - but, that MacBook felt sooooo nice to hold.
  • It boots up really fast. Sorry, no times yet.
  • No slot for dock on the bottom
  • 1440 x 900 resolution is really nice and bright
  • Lenovo has done a fantastic job with the X300. Feels good.
  • When can we expect something similar for the X61? I'd love to see something just like this with Tablet PC functionality

More later. Enjoy the pictures below ( after the read more link ), which are of the X300 and the X61. Click them to view higher res shots.

Dear God, I wish that they did this to the X61T too. Just wait until summer, I don't need a tablet until fall for school, but just take this svelte form factor, make it a Montevina, and that's all I want for school next year.

Thanks Rob for all the photos!
Yes a tablet version would be awesome.

Yesterday I was able to "touch and feel" MBA in our local Apple store and I'd have to say it's one of the sexiest pieces of engineering I've come across and nothing, really nothing compares to MBA - it's so gorgeous.

My main machine is X60 and I'm loving it but if MBA had a touch-screen or wacom-enabled screen, I'd buy it in an instant... but being used to Tablet PCs (Toshiba M200 before and now Thinkpad X60), can't make the switch...

Although the beauty and sexiness of MBA is making me think... I mean, it's a computer that when you open it up to work.... a big smile on your face would come up every day...

So although X300 is a NT (Nice Try), it just doesn't compare to the elegance of MBA (and I'm a Thinkpad user!)... and a bunch of extra ports won't cut it... and why oh why would they crunk in a DVD drive? I haven't had a laptop/tablet with a DVD drive for years and don't need it!

All in all, MBA is just fantastic and nothing compares to it. Steve Jobs and Apple have outdone themselves yet again...

if you don't like the dvd drive in the x300, get one with a battery or blank bezel in that bay instead!
